I accidentally found the following article today (written in Japanese). Basically, a Toyota engineer says that Al tapes on the car body can effectively reduce the positively charged electrostatic on the body and improve the aerodynamics. The following is the machine translation by Bing.

Note that this claim/news is not new, when I googled I could find a similar article published in 2016. Some of you might have heard about this already. If you have already tried, let me know!

    ************************************************************************
Toyota has published a new technology outline that has been adopted in the new and improved two-door sports coupe ' 86 ' with a significant minor change. "Aerodynamic control by aluminum tape" is achieved, and it contributes greatly to the improvement of the steering stability while low cost.

The electric body was worn, effectively released by the aluminum tape that has been optimally arranged, it is changed to each site aerodynamic balance of the body during traveling, it seems to contribute to the improvement of the straight stability, such as times head.

More specifically, the air is charged to + (plus), the car is easy to use + charging by traveling, this will force peel off the air around the vehicle body, it is not possible to exert sufficient aerodynamics (aerodynamic) because the flow of air is disturbed. It is discharged by aluminum tape, and the flow of air is improved, and the effect is brought to the tire grounding property, the roll control, the Gostability, and the steering response.

In fact, the body of the improved 86, the aluminum tape is affixed to the total three places in the lower side window and the steering column cover (can not be seen by the naked eye), Toyota explains that the effect can be achieved by anyone without aluminum tape. This technology it has already been adopted in the new "Noah/Voxy" and Lexus [RX], it is said that the body of the box form than the body shape that was originally designed to specialize in aero dynamics like 86, there is a more obvious effect.

"Even though I was said to be an occult," he laughs, Nagataka is an engineer who actively adopted this idea in the vehicle experiment Department. The reason was that someone glued to the resin part of the experimental vehicle and forgot to remove the "Earth". "There was obviously a change in performance when I put this on or took it off. Next, the same result came out even if it tried with the glass, and it was a static electricity. That's why we used aluminum tape as a good way to fly static electricity more effectively, "says Sasa.

"Including adhesives, the aluminum tape itself is not special, and it is exactly the same as the one used for the repair at home etc. As it is said," The cost is cheap because it is the one which circulates normally, and durability is also the deciding factor of the adoption of aluminum tape ". After it was found to be effective in improving the performance, the thickness and length of the tape, such as the energization of the adhesive and trial and error, it was formally adopted a shape with a long slit.

In this interview, I was able to experience the difference using the conventional 86. After running the conventional 86 normal state, the column cover, the Four corners of the front and rear bumper, and the aluminum tape in addition to the bottom window, the flow of traveling the same course. The General road around Lake Kawaguchi is not very good road condition in the normal state of 86, the handle is taken with a moderate vibration, but it was possible to feel the clear difference in the stability of the foot almost eliminating the necessity of the modified snake even on the same road as the state with aluminum tape. It is said that the difference is understood even in about 20 ~ 30km/h if it is a sensitive person though the most difference was remarkable at the speed of about 50km/h.

Toyota said, "Aluminum tape is a commercially available one, and it has various effects by attaching it to various places such as bumpers. We hope that users will enjoy experimenting with each other while exchanging information, "and you can expect to expand your custom culture with an easy" aluminum tape tuning "entrance. The effect of the aluminum tape, of course, is to be seen in any type of car other than 86, so why not try to be anxious readers.

Doesn't have to work to get a patent. You can submit a patent application for anything.

The general idea isn't totally unfounded. You could in theory probably use static electricity to manipulate the boundary layer. But since majority of the drag on a car is pressure drag, I can't see this making as significant of a difference as is described in this article. If it's as easy as slapping some tape on the car, why are they doing this already?

Ohh S#IT, someone have the internet gods delete this article before the Ricers get wind of it.

Yes, you are correct, but in this case, Toyota also filed WO patent (= patents application practically all over the world, which costs a lot to file and maintain) as well, usually only filed only for significant/hopeful patents. It does not appear to me that Toyota is simply trying to make a case as "prior art" to block other competitors' patents.

As for the patentability - Patent examiners might say "obvious" and the applicant says if obvious, why no one else filed before? Thus, "non-obvious", though final call is made by the examiner.

My understanding is that the air tends to be positively charged and the car tends to be positively charged as there are many plastic parts. Since positive charge and positive charge repel each other, the air cannot flow smoothly along the car body. If Al tape can reduce the positive charge on the plastic part, the positively charged air can flow along the car more smoothly.

I am curious how much this can be effective. Can Al tape improve 1% of performance-whatever it is? or 0.0001%?

I'm curious as well. What do aircraft with composite wings do? If this is an issue for plastic bumpers, I'm guessing it's an issue for composite wings and fuselages as well.
