Pets and your truck

Lets get off the dark subjects some and try something else. I'm sure some may think this thread is stupid but it may help someone. Is that not a part of this forum to help others if you can.
Do any of you carry your dog or cat in your truck?
I have a problem, a cat! Most cats hate riding in cars or trucks and thats true for my cat. Dogs seem to love riding in cars or trucks. I had one cat out of 5 that liked riding in a vehicle.Many people don't like cats and can understand why but I do like some cats. My choices are limited.
We had her about 5 years and I think my wife loves her more than me but when I ask her if I could get a new truck she said "Sure what ever you want" so she does love me some. She is a indoor outdoor cat so leaving her outside is a possibility and have somebody feed her but she trusts very few people and she has never been away from my wife a single day. The last time we done that 2 huskies killed that cat.
Kennel no way I have been to the local kennels.
Pet carrier nope. You have to put her almost in a straight jacket to get her in there to go to the vet.
Someone said just shoot her problem solved, lol better to shoot myself and then my wife can trade the Tacoma for a Rav4.
I think I can train her for a leash but training her to ride freely in the truck is what I am going to have to do.
Any suggestions on how to train a cat to ride in my truck? I'm getting ready to install Katzkin leather seats in my truck. I did see something on Coverking website that you can fold down your back seats (I have a double cab) to protect stuff and maybe get her to ride back there.
Your advice is welcome.

 

Get rid of the cat and get a dog?!?
I have a dog that acts like a cat. I just throw her in the back. Sometimes she sits in my wife's lap.

 

Runtacorun nice caribou I mount a few of those.
Getting rid of the cat not a option but I would love a blue healer.

 

Leave the wife at home with the cat.

 

Then she won't let me back in lol.

 

Try putting the cat's favorite bed/pillow in the back seat and set it next to it. Maybe add some catnip to calm it down and just let it get used to the space without driving first. See how it does.

Otherwise, get a dog.
Here are my Shibas in my last truck. They ride together behind a seatbelt or one in the passenger seat behind the belt and one in the back seat, or on my lap.

I had a cat that enjoyed riding in the car ages and ages ago. The trick was he needed a space he could sit in the sun. I had a hatch back then and he sat on the parcel shelf, just chilled and watched the world go by.

German Short haired pointer. Still just a pup but already very smart.

 

Here's a pic of Cooper, our 4 month old Moyen Poodle. Luckily he doesn't shed. This pic was literally taken 10 minutes after he took a massive dump inside Home Depot. What a fiasco! Hard to get mad at this face though.

 

This is my 155 pound Brutus. No, he can't jump into the truck bed by himself. That dog bed is 42" across, just to give you an idea.

 

Put a mouse in your truck and go!

 

Regarding the pet carrier, take a different approach. Buy a bigger one and put it in your den. Put some really comfy blankets in it. Cover it with a nice quit or blanket. In other words, make a nice cat home out of a larger crate. Throw toys in it. Throw treats in it. High value treats. Feed the cat in it. Get the cat so used to it, that it's no longer an issue.

Your next challenge will be acclimating the cat to the crate in the car. Go on short rides. Reward the cat with high value treats. You know, ice cream or other favorites.

You're going to have to work hard at positive reinforcement.

Worst case, go to the vet and get some anxiety pills. We had to do that for our lab mix. Not sure about cats. Hope it has been declawed.

I changed the caribou avatar. I will try to update in the fall after caribou season.

 

The shepherd "talks" to us whenever she has to go out, but quiet as a mouse on the way home. The big red golden loves to ride, but at age 12+ and with a couple of jacked up legs, he always needs help to get in. The blonde guy wants to ride, but stresses out when he does.
Sorry, no useful advice, just wanted to post pics of the family.

Ps, always inside, never in the bed. I don't trust them not to do something stupid.

I fold down the rear sets to use the backs as a flat platform. It's perfect. I got a $5 yoga mat from TJ Maxx and trimmed it to fit, then used velcro all around the edge to keep it in place. It gave him some grip for turns and bumps and kept the back of my seats from getting clawed to shit. He's about 90-95lbs now...he can do damage.

Don't have a pic in the new truck yet, but he was always ready to roll in my 2013. I'm gonna buy a divider gate for the new one before he gets in it. He slobbers on my head rests and has a bad habit of climbing over my center console when I go in a store...I'm not trying to have that on the new baby.

Good luck trying to train a cat to roam freely in a vehicle and remain calm. I've had a lot of cats, none have like vehicles when moving.

 

OK, another dog transporter here. But, always in the back, which is the reason we buy toppers for all our trucks. No way those muddy hooligans get to ride up front. Nice to have the sliding window so they can hang their heads inside the cab. Which brings me to my point: do you have a topper, and would the cat like to be able to wander around? You could put the catbox back there, and it could go through the window. I've transported cats in the past and cats seem to like to find the nook they feel the safest in and just hang out there.
