Just bought a 3rd Gen 2017 TRD off-road. Did I make a mistake?

    Hello all.

I am new to this forum, but I am not new to Toyotas or Tacomas. I had a 1991 MKII MR2 from 2002 to 2009. I would probably still have it, but someone hit my car and totaled it. I subsequently bought a Tacoma 2007 2 seater manual transmission work stripper, which I have been driving until today. I really loved both cars.

I put 150K miles on the 2007 tacoma, and it went to 179K miles. I didn't have one single problem with the 07 Tacoma. I didn't have any problems with my MR2 either (200K miles).

I just blindly bought a Blazing blue pear 3rd Gen 17 TRD off-road based on the good will that toyota built with me as a brand. I did not research this car at all. Also, I have two kids now, and it was the only manual transmission truck I could find in the area. In fact its the only 4 door manual transmission automobile on the market that can support two kids with strollers and other kid related gear (other than an BMW 3 series).

    I paid 35K, which I thought was a lot for a Tacoma.

I love everything about this car, but today, I read through this forum. I am really shocked to see that this model is getting hammered here and even in different review articles online.

Did I make a mistake here guys? Is this really an unreliable car?

I feel like I should return it or something, but I really like the look of the car. I want to support it just out of Toyota's respect for manual transmission drivers.

This is probably not a good first post as a new member, but I don't know where else to ask.

My 2016 Off Road is great! I don't think you made a mistake at all.

Your mistake was coming to Tacoma World. It's a great resource for certain information but there are a lot of haters and people posting that don't even own a 3rd Gen about all the problems. Enjoy your truck and be careful what you read on here.

I'd say relax and enjoy the truck. There are far more important things to be neurotic about.

No mistake with the Manual! My 2016 Sport with the 6 Speed has been wonderful - Getting close to it's 30,000 mile service. Nothing to complain about - All systems are working perfectly. - Clay

You will be fine, you got the manual transmission. Drive hell out of it for a few years and then enjoy the resale value when you sell it or trade it.

I joined TW months before I bought my Tacoma. The problems that some people have didn't stop me from buying it. The only thing TW did was seal my decision to get a manual instead of an auto. I'm happy with the truck so far. Very happy.

TW is a very small portion of Tacoma owners. You can go on any vehicle forum and read about people who have problems. Just drive your truck and enjoy it. Congrats!

OP. Run, run as fast as you can from this place. Kidding.

Fact of the matter is you may or may not have some or all of the issues a 3rd Gen has. Some folks will say the truck is perfect and some will disagree.

Some are going to try and troll you in here and some might get all snowflake on you if they don't like your answers.

Best thing you should do is read up on the current issues a 3rd Gen has and see if you fit in those categories. Drive your truck according to your needs. If it doesn't pan out, take a loss and move on. Not trying to come off as a dick to a new member, but this kind of post happens a lot around here.

OP, I bought the same truck as you about 2 months ago, except in quicksand. I absolutely love it! It hasn't given me any trouble at all in all of the 1700 miles I've put on it. Enjoy it! I'm 62 years old, and I feel like a kid with a new toy every time I drive it! Can't wait to go back to Colorado and Utah like in my FJ40 days!

Enjoy it and stick to the What have you done thread for your own sanity.

There's a few quirks here and there but so far mine has been reliable after 1.5 years/16k miles.

They are expensive, no doubt, but trucks tend to be. I've gotten my monies worth out of it hands down with everything I use mine for so far.

    And Welcome.:headbang:

Have fun with your truck, but do yourself a favor and look up any recalls that might affect your new purchase, especially the CPS issues and rear differential leaks. Congrats on an awesome truck.

No mistake at all getting your '17 Taco TRD OR. Like a few others said above, your only mistake is coming onto TacomaWorld. Ha. Get ready to want to spend money on mods. I'm very happy with my '17 TRD OR. I used to own a '98 Taco and put over 200k miles on it with very little issue. Enjoy yours new Taco.

Only mistake you made was overpaying. $35k seems like a lot.

Other than that, welcome to beta testing for Toyota's 3rd gen Tacoma

All new vehicles regardless of make and model will have some issues. Mostly minor and fixable. If you hadn't joined TW, you wouldn't know about any of them so just drive and enjoy your truck......btw, I love my truck!!!
