I have a service appointment next week in Phoenix AZ, my VIN is on the recall list. My service adviser said they will keep the truck, and give me a loaner, if a leak is found. I inspected it and it looks like there is a small leak in a couple spots. I may cancel the appointment until they have what ever they need to fix the problem.

Well... You're kind of next to California. :p

I've just got to know what is the reasoning, law, anything? that gives them the right to think they can keep it without your consent??? Ask him if you talk to him again. Like I said before, if it's a "saftey issue" then why the shit isn't it a immediate recall... I mean they don't want your truck or the guy next to yous truck on the road for "safety reasons", but the other few hundred hundred thousand... well oh, they can wait till June!?!? I mean WTF sense does that make?!?! Someone needs to call them on their shit, it's pissing me off!!!

We'll just ignore the whole legality issue for the time being, of what right do they have to keep it in the first place, and focus on their logical reasoning...

You know I'm kind of right though..
Can't you easily see this kind of thing getting out of hand. I'm genuinely curious what the 20 something year old service rep would say if he said, oh we've got to keep your truck until the fix in June, and you looked him straight in the eye and said, "no you won't."
Would that just blow his little mind? Would he actually agrue with you and think he can keep your property? Really surprised this hasn't come up yet with someone on the forum. Just one of those issues that pushes my buttons. Sorry for all the ranting.

Exactly, doesn't make sense. If you happen to hear about the recall and like to care of things and bring it in, you get your truck confiscated.

But all the other 2016 and 17 Tacomas you see everyday, everywhere are OK waiting until June???

And not just confiscated, confiscated for whenever, we don't have an estimate?

The way they are doing this can be argued as dangerous. Someone hears about the recall, looks under his or her truck, sees a significant leak, but reasons "there's no way I'm taking it in now, with all these horror stories of trucks being confiscated with no ETA." Afraid of having it checked out, rear axle fails, causing a multi vehicle crash.

Most of you have been driving around for months oblivious to the leak and everything was fine. Now that you've heard about a recall, the procedures to correct and are aware of a potential parts delay, you lose your shit after seeing a few spots.

    This place never disappoints.

Took my truck in for the first service:
    • Completed the 5,000 mile service including rotating tires and checking fluids
    • Had them grease the driveshaft, grease the u-joints, and retorque the u-bolts as a precautionary measure since these have been deficient from the factory for a lot of people
    • Had them complete the H0G safety recall check for the potential rear differential leak, mine wasn't leaking so they just retorqued the bolts
    • After they continually refused, eventually had them complete the available Entune radio update, see T-SB-0103-16 Rev1 - page 5 - the firmware update available for my truck is "13TDANNA-DA11_0137.kwi". If you have any glitchy radio issues or Bluetooth syncing issues, this is your fix.
    • After they continually refused, eventually they verified that my truck already had the most current transmission TSB done from the factory and an update isn't available so the poor transmission performance is what it is, see T-SB-0077-16 Rev 1 - page 3 - the Rev1 calibration ID that was already on the truck is "896650401300". If your truck is a newer 2017 like mine, it's likely that you already have the TSB done as well. Unfortunately there isn't another update available at this time.
    • They completely refused to do a physical check of the automatic transmission fluid to verify if it is low which has been a reoccurring issue for a lot of people. They did make an interesting comment that there actually is a recall out for the low transmission fluid. They didn't provide me any information about it but said my VIN wasn't a part of it so they would not do the work unless I paid for it. I don't have any clunking or delays going into reverse which is where you'd see the issue first but I wanted to have it checked for peace of mind. If you have any delays going into reverse, definitely take it to the dealership since there's a high probability that it it is low
For reference, I have a 2017 TRD Sport Double Cab Short Bed 4x4 V6 Auto (7542) in blazing blue pearl purchased in Brevard county, Florida on December 22, 2016. My truck was manufactured in the Texas, USA plant in December 2016.

According to my dealership, I'm in tip top shape. Nothing to see here. Dry as can be and not even a morsel of residue that would indicate seeping.

Oh also, they couldn't hear any noise from the rear end. Somehow, it's magically gone away after leave it with them. /S

I opened another case with corporate. I shouldn't have to fight with a dealership to acknowledge such a blatant problem.

Not to dismiss anyone having problems of any sort with their ride, but i find watching other people loose their shit somehow calming....

Also, I would rather be aware of all the potential issues than not, just saying.

I am not sure I understand the differential issue. Unless your differential is dripping oil, what is the rush to get in to have it checked? From the photos I have seen, it looks like a drop or two has leaked out despite one year of driving. Why the rush?

While I see some people in a rush to get it checked, others I see are intentionally waiting cause of all the unknowns about keeping the truck. Others, like myself, are just going to have it checked on normal maintenance. I will roll past 15k miles sometime tomorrow. My 15k mile service is on Saturday so I will be bringing it up then rather than make another trip to the dealership at some undetermined later time. Also, in my case if they want to keep the truck and give me a loaner, then I'll put my 70 mile commute on their loaner for a while instead of my truck.

    going to be fun!
So, I went back to the dealer this weekend after they looked at this issue in Feb and was told it was normal....

I asked the service manager what the purpose of a gasket was? He looks at me with this blank stare what did he just ask me.So I asked again what is the purpose of a gasket? So i then said gaskets work as seals to maintain pressure or leaks of fluids from things with fluids in them correct? So if fluid is getting past a gasket designed to keep fluids in seeping or otherwise it's faulty right if its getting past said gasket? I was then told your Truck is not on the recall list you have no issue.

Mine is in right now (I'm waiting at the dealer) for the rear diff seeping (mine isn't on the list), howling rear diff, and high pressure fuel pump chirp.

I have known my SA for almost 10yrs and he doesn't try to BS me or up-sell me on anything (anymore). He tells me right off the bat that for the recall (again, mine isn't on the list) I either A) leave it with them and put me in a Corolla - to which I answered "Nope!" or B) they send me on my way.

I told him I'm not on the recall and at this point I would expect an inspection/documentation, a check/re-torque and for him to contact me when the parts become available. He mentioned that they have no idea what is going on right now, but that his boss has a 3rd gen Taco and will continue to drive it until a fix is sent out from Toyota.

Side-note: of course the HPFP noise wasn't happening when I tried showing him but I can't imagine them not hearing my howl at 60mph.

Will update with results once I have them.

EDIT/UPDATE: Got truck back after 1.5hrs. They ordered a gasket and documented the rest. I will push the diff issue once they dig into it and will keep an eye on the HPFP. He heard the noise and put an inquiry in with Toyota. We'll see...

I'm starting a plan with my service advisor (I work at the dealership) to get my truck back and just bring it in again once the remedy is available. Well see how it goes. I def feel like I jumped the gun dropping it off but from my end I was told A) 4 hour job to replace the gasket, so I dropped it off, then B) Oh its leaking and Toyota wants to put you in a rental till they can come out to check it in a few days, now were on C) undetermined amount of time you will be in the rental and without your truck. Hind sight is a bitch. Ill post if I have any success (Or lack there of)
