    Hey guys,

I have come into many situations up here when a full sized truck would have came handy. I dront really use my truck to haul much, but I have some toys that I plan on purchasing. I am thinking of selling my DC 4x4 OR Taco and buying a Dodge Cummings diesel. I need yalls opinon on what you would do. I plan on buying a snowmachine and a 4x4 Grizzley. Should I just buy a trailor or get a full size truck? My Taco in the winter gets around 14-16 mpg in the winter. With a Dodge, I can get 22-28 mpg in the winter. I know, I know, its a Dodge. But the Cummings diesel is one of the best diesel engines money can buy. Their resale value is horrible. I have noticed that the Tacos resale values have dropped significantly also. What do you think? Thanks for your time.--Doug

If you can get that type of mileage with the Cummins then go for it. In Alaska do you really care about resale. I would think any truck on the roads up there can expect to get a bit beat up.
While not particularly a Dodge fan I do have some friends with Crew Cab diesels and they really love em. They will haul anything and go anywhere- so long as the road is wide enough.
Might find some nice person up there to take the Taco off your hands.
In the end, it's your call.

How much do your forthcoming toys weigh? How much does trailer weigh? Do you have a tow package on your Tacoma? I dont know about Alaska, but used Tacomas around here still go for alot.

Resale on the Cummins equipped Dodge trucks has looked pretty strong in my area...although they tend to be bought by farmers and ranchers who drive them forever.

Knowing the enormous price difference between the Taco and a Cummins-equipped Dodge, I would go with the Taco + trailer. But if you have the $$$ to spare, and know how to keep a diesel starting and running in your AK weather, then the Dodge would seem to be a good choice.

If I was going fullsize I would go Dodge with the Cummins. Depending on how much your new toys weigh you might be better off with the Dodge. I know Chris4x4 has both due to the same fact. Loves the toy, but needs the torque of the diesel for goodies.

Good choice on a diesel if you do buy one, but if you buy a full size truck you are gonna miss your mid size tacoma.

I have family and friends that own and have owned dodge diesels, the engine is great, the transmission sucks and the truck will fall apart around the engine. That is from everyone I know. Chevy has the Isuzu, just as good an engine with the better trans. What I got from your description, you don't need a diesel and they don't get that kind of mileage either.

I wouldn't want a truck that large, personally, but I sure would love to have a diesel.

If you're just getting an ATV, I don't think you really need to switch trucks... Would be cheaper to get a trailor.

I would never own a Dodge. Even though the Cummins are solid, I would be completely unable to trust the rest of the truck.

If you need a full-size or HD truck, go Ford.

Not to be a douche nugget, but reading any of the posts in this thread, did you get that impression what so ever?

If I had the chance I'd probably trade my Tacoma for a Dodge cummings, not that I don't like my truck, but it feels little sometimes. I would go for something lifted, and a one ton over the 2500, just my preference, a little more heavy duty. As far a chevy and the duramax, great engine and tranny but with the indepentant front end that just can't handle the weight over time in the back roads would really steer me away from the chevy. IMO.

    Depends.

A lot of "those" threads go something like:

And in that case, the "bashers" are absolutely correct.

A lot of people have a lot of legitimate reasons for moving from a mid-size truck to something else...their needs change, or they suck at making life decisions and never should've bought a Taco in the first place.

A lot of people also don't.

In this case, the OP has noted there are times when he would use a full-size or 3/4 ton truck's abilities...towing/hauling, etc. I say he should go for it if he needs it. I just wouldn't go Dodge. Ford is a far more reliable company, all the objective data is clear about this.

That's cause Toyota is fucking awesome.

    But so is the cummins.

Nothing says fun like getting air in a 3/4ton diesel.

Not going to help at all. The Dodge is a 6 cylinder too.

It's Cummins not Cummings. Second, I can see the advantages of a full size truck. A few times I wished I still had my old F250 with the 8 foot bed.

Third, if you can afford the extra cost of a diesel then go for it. Just remember that not only is the initial cost more but maintenance is more expensive as well. The nice thing is if properly maintained the motor will go for hundreds of thousands of miles.

Trade your Toy in on a dodge and hangout at the dodge forums, you'll see real problems then.
