There are a few areas, in the valve body, that draw air into the hydraulic circuits (not good) when the WS transmission fluid contracts within the valve body (when it cools). Note: This could be corrected by sealing off the leaky areas. There is currently no solution available that I am aware of. This is the source of all the jerky, delayed response, and flaring behavior people have been complaining about since the 3rd gen Tacoma was released.

Get the manual transmission. I have it and I wouldn't look back. If you need to haul lumber, or anything longer than the Short Box, get yourself one of these... I use this to haul my Kayak and at $60 to make your bed longer, manual transmission is the way to go.

I second the Manual, just got mine and loving every minute of it. My sisters boyfriend got the automatic and hates the thing. I actually look forward to driving again.

Thanks rockguitar for the link. That would be a great addition. Wouldn't need the extra length all that much. I guess camping in the back might not work so well but that's why I have a tent.

you keep saying you're excited about considering a MT truck... if that's the case then definitely get it. fun factor is huge, but the AT's are often equally horrible so I'd not take that risk and just bank on the fun (and 4.3 rear gears unlike the long bed).

Yes. I am becoming more excited and since posting the question all of my own thoughts have been confirmed from many other posters including yourself. I have been on the fence before this post. Thanks to all of you it has helped me with the decision. I believe I posted before that I will be making the deposit today on a manual..unfortunately won't be here till end of July....Decision made. Thank you all!

    This ^^^

Get the manual... I had a '16 auto and I couldn't stand it. Even if you don't have the jerky, delayed or flaring behavior, you'll have to deal with the ECT ECU "learning" and dialing back pedal performance in the name of MPG.

*Its a gamble with the automatics. Most transmissions seem okay, some of us were unlucky.

I recommend you get the long bed with the auto.
The long bed will make your ride much more comfortable among other benefits if you don’t mind the extra length and slight loss in parking maneuverability.

Either truck is fine, but if you got to have a locker, get the off-road.
With the SR5 you can get whatever set of wheel/tire combination that’ll make you happy but the OR it’ll be harder to bite the $$ bullet to replace them, not that they are bad, they’re very good for factory but they lack for me.

I would recommend the auto especially on a 4X4 since clutches are like brakes, they wear out and R&R on a 4X4 is expensive labor and a PITA to replace.
But If you’re getting 2wd, It’s only a few hr labor and a six pack and you’re good to go.
Outside the clutch, the manual is bullet-proof, and outside a couple clutches, I couldn’t break mine in almost 300k miles.
But the auto should be good for 200-300k miles with no issues, and if you ever do like me and sprain your ankle or break a leg, you’ll appreciate that you got the auto because learning how to shift a manual without clutching comes with some gear grinding pains.
And that was the last time I had a manual and because my better half would have burned a clutch trying to learn to drive it and would probably still not want to drive a manual.

Hope that helps, good luck and let us know how you make out, pics too!
    Cheers!

Sounds like you don't need a truck tbh.

Thanks again for the feedback. Called the dealer today and secured the one of two manuals in route to anchorage. Delivery date July 15thish. Got them to go from 35,200 to 34,000. To be honest I really didn't expect them to budge that much. So after papers and two years registration I'm at 34,600. Gotta love the no sales tax:)

    Manual Inferno here we come!

    Thanks again for the help.

Good color choice. Wish mine was Inferno. I actually had an inferno access cab ordered but while waiting I stumbled upon a 4 door black one with the same option I wanted for a better price so I jumped on it!

Price def. trumps. My choice was either blue or inferno. Blue looks good but is too "pretty" for me. No offense to people who have blue. In all honesty any color looks good on these trucks.

Manual for my dogs and family, but I REALLY wanted an a/c manual. Definitely wish I had the long bed on several occasions but the cab space is utilized every day for me with the double cab. @JARStacoma in the end, it depends on your needs and it sounds like you made the right choice for yourself. And good choice with the manual inferno! :headbang:

Can't get the Access Cab with 6-Speed in the OR in the US. Until then, Sport > OR for me.
