dealer I've gone to doesn't know anything.
I mentioned the 16s were low and they looked at me like I was crazy.

no he did do the check.
you didn't specify visual check or computer check.
Techs can check it with tech stream, but it doesn't give an accurate reading. if I remember right from another thread its becasue the sensor they get the reading from is lower in the trans than the fill level is. So it can still be low and not show it. Its more so meant to be a warning for if its running really low.

To find out if you have the common issue you need a visual test, and the trans needs to be cool.
Another way to tell if you are possibly low is if you monitor your trans temp. low fluid would result in high temp transmission.
You'd need a scangauge though to monitor it.

So are you saying that the ToyotaCare requirement to check trans fluid is not by physical inspection, but instead is done by reading a sensor, and that sensor is below the physical fill point?

!! edited to clarify trans fluid

Wouldn't a Veepeak OBD2 module and DashCommand do the trick for monitoring the temp?

This is my first new toyota bought from a dealership, but from my experience and from reading other's on here, I can say there is one very simple thing that Toyota fails miserably at: consistency. As a consumer, it is frustrating to have varying degrees of customer service based on where you go or who you talk to. I know the dealers aren't Toyota, but they sell Toyota products, and I'm sure Toyota has some say on how that business is managed.

No they won't check it because it's a "sealed system"

Is there a danger in overfilling a transmission? I would think this would be a worry if it was "filled" further.

Also, Toyota care is not free...it's rolled into the cost of what we all pay for our trucks.

    Ditto. exactly my experience.

Edit to clarify: I still hate my dealer's service center.

My experience was exactly like DRJ1014. The dealer that I took mine to didn't bat an eye about checking the transmission fluid and I had really not experienced any shifting problems. After checking it they said it was 1 qt. down and also re-flashed the computer via the TSB. But, I did have to leave it overnight. AAMOF they have not ever questioned any thing I have heard about on TW like the plugs, window seals, and squeaking front bushing. They fixed all of these quickly (never more than an hour stay). The Certified tech there is GREAT and I drop him off a case of his favorite libation periodically.

Plot twist - dealers are telling everyone that their transmissions were 1qt low just to get them to stfu and leave.
