2014 at the shop

Little background by 2014, 34,000 miles and today I dropped it off at my shop to have a noise in the rear end / exhaust ,this third time I have dropped it off at the dealership for this, first unreproducible, 2nd time they said early spark knock with reprogram, this time they were able to reproduce the noise at a speed of 40 to 50 miles per hour sound Sounds as a rubbing noise or howling in the rear end But they couldn't pinpoint the location and but they kept it and gave me a rental on them.I asked about the inspection and the wheel hubs and bearings and tires , Was told Inspection was Good, nothing out of the normal other than a noise while driving between 40 and 60 miles an hour does anybody have any ideas. I was thinking drive axel ( bearing) as when I go up hill I hear it ??

We had to replace a Rear end in one for a similar noise.

The sound I was hearing was in the mid rear , but only while in gear, i was going through the steps with dealership, I will try ideas with them , but hate wasting time in going their. I by no means am a mechanic , do my own oil and easy maintenance , but guessing is all I am doing now.

 

I had my driveshaft (CB) go out on my 2014 with 8K miles on it, but the dealer replaced it under warranty. Maybe it's the driveshaft/ universal joints since there's no way to grease them on a Prerunner.

 

Do you recall the sound it made

 

It was like a roaring sound, didn't sound like a groan/howl like you would hear from a rear diff

 

Like the exhaust was underwater, or throaty?

Feel like Aamco commercial on tv

Probably more like the grrrrr / whine , but only after it was warmed up driving around 15-20 miles. Wouldn't do it when it was cool

 

If it sounds like bdddddd chingaling ling bddddddd crunch chingaling brrrr uh it's probably the u joints

 

Not so fast. My Pre-Runner came stock with grease fittings ( Zerk Fittings ) on the universal joints. More accurate to say SOME Pre-Runners do and SOME Pre-Runners do not have grease fittings on the U Joints.

Yeah the 4cyl Prerunners do have grease fittings, but the V6's don't

prerunners built after 2009 or 2011 (cant remember the year) have zerks in the drive shaft.


OP has the rear diff oil ever been changed?

Is the noise while moving when you let off the throttle (coasting / decelerating?) or is it when you are constantly moving.

 

Well was located and fixed was a loose bolt in engine near air box that would rattle drove home after standing with adviser and asking what the hell, he said never seen any thing like it, just unreal but on the trip home all quiet .
