6 speed issues

bought a 2005 trd sport 6 speed. throwout bearing/bell housing/shift rod issues. just curious as to how many of us suckers bought the faulty 6 speed tranny thinking they were taking the safe route buying the manual. warranty will not cover it. i'm sitting @54,000 miles. apparently it should be covered AS IT IS THE BELL HOUSING AND SHIFT ROD THAT ARE CAUSING THE T/O BEARING TO CRACK!!! i'm really unhappy with toyota over this and would like to contact the media and get this out there. anybody interested in aiding me and a few others in this? for those who currently own a 6 speed, but haven't yet had this occur, i'd keep a close eye on it, and cross your fingers it doesn't rear its ugly head. the rpair bills will be huge, and its sounds as though toyota doesn't have a fix yet. some owners have had this t/o bearing replaced 4 times, and have eventually had their trannys replaced!. i myself expected better build quality from toyota, and a little more support from their service. if i wanted a cheapo, shitty truck, with issues, i wouls have bought a ford. over and out

 

Over and Out doesn't make sense. Over means you are done transmitting and awaiting a response, Out means you are done transmitting and are not waiting for a response. You can't put them together like in the movies. They contradict themselves. I'm just messing with ya, I too have the 6-speed tranny and (knock on wood) have not had any issues with it yet.

I had a 08 6sp and the throwout bearing was replaced. it made a whining noise when sitting, or when shifting (it changed) luckily though it was under warrantee because it was under 36k miles. anyway long story short,,,, i always play nice with the service writers/mechanics because they always seem to hook me up.

i've read about this on this forum but haven't had any issues with my 5 speed yet...is this only for 6 speeds?...if mine does this i will get it fixed then trade it in for a nissan frontier...why keep it if it's gonna happen again and again?...this just seems to be an odd problem...i mean how long has toyota been making manual trannys?...they should know how to do it by now...lol...probably some lame company that made the parts for them screwed something up

 

when i bought my truck it wasn't yet an issue 808matt. i don't really see how thats my fault. its a toyota 6 speed issue. anyway i see you have the 6 speed. better watch what you say big boy! squeek, squeek... is that your throw out bearing?lol!

 

i did research before buying my 2010 Tacoma, went against getting the Xrunner because of this KNOWN issue. Its all over the FJ Forums too. its ONLY the 6 speeds and there is suppost to be a TSB and a fix for it, last month....to no avail. As far as your original post, it sounded like, or i should say read like you bought it with the problem and hoped to fix it cheap....its just how it read, i thought the same thing, that you bought a bad trans truck to fix. Depending on when you got it, there was a ton of issues out there and its a known defect. some get lucky adn dont have the problem , but it was a major factor NOT to buy the X runner (or a 4x4 6 spd, automatics are for soccer moms and minivans )

 

No problems with mine yet, I'm about 46K miles so far.

What were the symptoms that you had your throw-out bearing go bad?

 

exactly what he said. from reading your post it seemed like you bought it w/ the known problem. hence me saying it was dumb on your part then.

 

It sounds like a chirping/squealing. It goes away if you depress the clutch. Nothing more than annoyance really.

no signs before. it started about 5,000 miles ago. I didn't notice it during the winter because my windows were closed. once i noticed it, it became louder and more obvious. did a search on it and voila! big time concern for many 6 speed owners. i opted for the 6 speed, because i figured it was the safe bet as far as toyota trannys went. no dice. for the record i don't do any super serious 4x4ing and really maintain my truck well. the worst part is that it doesn't seem like toyota has got their collective shit together and found the fix for this yet. so, i guess its just wait and see. for those that think i'm a whiner, well when i spend $30,000 plus on a new truck, i don't expect unsolvable issues at 50,000 miles. this truck is barely broken in. its pretty embarrasing when a flashy new tacoma sounds like a 10 yaer old sunfire. just wanna get the word out there and see if we can't get toyota to find a proper fix, and admit these trannys are crap

Yes, he should. This is a problem waiting to happen on every single 6 speed FJ and 05+ Tacoma out there. There is an aluminum pilot shaft that is not outlasting the pressure plate, clutch disk and release bearing, the primary wear and tear items. On most other truck transmissions, including the 05+ 4cyl 5 speed, the pilot shaft is made of steel and is a $75 replaceable item, but not the case on these 6 speeds. The aluminum pilot shaft on these 6 speeds is press fit into the bell housing and requires a new bell housing, which is even more labor plus a $400+ bell housing and another $300+ in wear and tear items at least. It's a ton of labor.

So if OP has any luck drawing the attention of the media that every single FJ and 05+ 6 speed is likely to suffer premature failure of clutch assembly due to a design and materials flaw on that pilot shaft, resulting in a $2000+ service bill, I applaud him.

I wonder how many owners start to hear that chirp and then trade their vehicle in on a "good day" when there is no noise, just to get rid of it... Seems there are a lot of preowned's out there waiting to "shaft" their new owners.

 

i too got a 6spd. no probs yet. i drive fast n shift hard. i have had an issue with one person where i've had to replace the bearing twice -not warranty because he said he wore it out offroading and riding the clutch. but he paid to replace it cuz it was making noise/going out.

 

Just out of curiosity, how many miles on your 08? This is usually a 50k- 80k event, sometimes less, but usually right around that range.

 

didnt know about "50-80k event" but i got alot but i killed my odo so i would say about 25k actual
