Yeah I was thinking about this too. The only question is does Vegas have the assets to pull this off.

Any team could use an Ovi for the regular season. :anonymous:

Ovi would put butts in the seats for Vegas. They don't need a key playoff performer. They just need someone who attracts the media and peasants into the building.

All true but why would they want to take on that contract for a guy who is on the back-half of his career. It would be cool short-term for ticket sales etc but if they want to build the right way, I think it is a bad idea.

How can Washington give up one of the best scores maybe in the League though? There best bet is stay the course and pray for a good run where Pittsburgh gets knocked out early. Or trade a star for a star with someone else, like the Suban trade kinda?,but that would be very difficult.

Dude, I agree. I think a lot of people have overreacted on this whole Washington issue, the last few years. The Pens are just better. Aside from them, I think the Caps would be fine, these past couple years. Had they won last night, I think that would've been the year that they win the Cup. But the Pens are just a little bit better and it just so happens that we come out of the same division. That is just how it goes. I wouldn't blow the team up intentionally. Free-agency will take it's toll on them this offseason, but if they have a good front office, they should have young guys in the pipe-line who can step up. The Pens have big guns but also all of the young guys (Jake G, Sheary, Rust, Murray etc etc) fill in the gaps, help with your cap situation and help you win. At the end of the day, the Pens stars > Caps stars. Plus, we have better young talent, currently. That is why Pens win.

Both the GM and Coach of the Capitals don't seem eager to keep Ovi around. Adam Oates even has publicly stated that he had conversations with management about trading Ovi but ownership stepped in and that was part of the reason he was fired. At this point it's up to ownership for when or if he leaves. This is a very similar situation to what happened with Iginlia in Calgary when Feaster came in as GM. He wanted to trade Iginlia right away since he could tell the returns were diminishing and the team needed to change leadership but Ken King wouldn't let Feaster do anything until the last year of Iginlia's contract. Long term that hurt the Flames. I think most people over estimate what Ovi brings now at his price tag. Think about it. For the price they are spending on Ovi they could re-up one of their UFA's and additionally probably bring on a more complete player rather than a just a sniper like Ovi. 9 million can be used to up a former contract by a few million and bring on a 4-7 million dollar player with change left over.

    See above.

Sure, the Pens have the Caps number. I'm not suggesting the Caps blow up the team. However, it would be hard to argue that if you could get a sizable return of young, cheap, and talented players for Ovi and turn the 9 million in cap savings into saving a UFA you really want to keep plus have cash left over to grab another talented player from either the UFA or trade market that it's not a smart move by the Capitals. I see a LV and Caps trade as a win win IF, and only if, LV can get together a package of promising players plus picks for Ovi. His name alone will carry the franchise for a few years.

Ya I agree with everything you said about Ovi and his return. If you can do it, then it might not be horrible move. I just don't know who would be willing to take that contract on at this point.

And I guess my other point was even with Ovi, I think the Caps had a team capable of winning but I'm just not shocked that they lost to Pens. I think Pens were probably the 1 team that is just better. It just looks worse because of the new playoff format and the Caps having to go through Pittsburgh every time. I think if they could've beaten us, then they would likely have won the Cup.
