No tundra upgrade. I'm already building a set of Spidertrax 9" axles that have really nice brakes, gonna keep the Tacoma brakes OEM since they will be temporary. The plan (which usually never works out as planned lol) is to run this suspension for this summer and fall then hopefully have the 9" axles finished by winter and get them installed by next summer. All the Icon stuff will move over to our 99 4runner which already has Tundra brakes so didnt want to spend the extra money for the short time they'll be used.

Side note: Decided i wanted to see what the wheels looked like mounted and had a few minutes to spare. Used a set of the correct lug nuts, just in chrome, to mount the front tires/wheels just for today, will swap the the black ones tomorrow when they get here...





Then decided what the heck, might as well pull it out and sweep out the garage, turn the truck around and pull it back in so I can start on the rear this weekend. Coilovers arent set for a full 3" of lift yet, only preloaded to about 1.25" of thread showing so the front end should go up a bit once I get everything fully adjusted...





Drivers side is set a little lower than the passenger, so it will need to come up even more, and to help account for the typical lean...




Excited to get started on the rear this weekend, hopefully can at least get it sitting on its own weight and rolling around!

Also..i would not lift it any higher. 3'' of lift is stupid. Hard on your joints and will blow the CVs.

I'd like it to be a little higher in the front mainly because I don't like the super raked look with the rear higher than the front. Obviously gonna wait until the rear is done before I adjust everything. I have OME Dakars going on the back and I know they'll sit quite a bit higher at first, hopefully when the settle/break in they wont be way higher than the front. I've also got a roof top tent that will be on the back all summer with a bed rack I'm building, CBI rear bumper on the way, and full size spare that will be mounted in the bed tied into the bed rack. So hopefully all that extra weight will help keep the rear from being way taller than the front. I may end up just bringing the drivers side up 1/2" or so to level it and call it good if the rear doesnt end up sky high.

 

Hope you got the AAL for the Dakars with all that planned weight.

Too much lift up front isn't ideal on these trucks in a lot of ways. Id recommend keeping it around 2" lift tops. Our trucks have rake from the factory..so that might be a given. That said, with around 2'' lift up front you should be within 1'' of the rear with the Dakars.

 

Anyone running 1/4 wheel spacers? Do I need longer studs? It looks close! My new wheels hit my damn tundra caliper

 

I did not get the AAL, every truck I've ever ridden in with an AAL rode like crap, I've never ridden in anything with the Dakar AAL particularly so it may not be bad, but I was just hoping I wouldnt need it! If I do they're super easy to put in and I can order it once I get everything else situated and see how it turns out.

And I agree, too much lift sucks, eats up all the downtravel, ruins the ride and tears up the front ends. This isnt my first IFS toyota to lift and wheel (hence the 9's I'm working on), I hate IFS aside from full long travel which I've had a few of also. The plan is to keep it as low as possible, just have to see where that ends up. Trucks not gonna see any "real" wheeling until the SAS, for this summer/fall I just wanted something to get out in the mountains and go camping with mainly. It might hit some local trails like Chinamans and Eagles Rock and a trip or two to Moab to run Poison Spyder, Gold Spike, Gold Bar type of trails but that would be the hardest stuff it sees until it has better suspension.

 

I think most trucks with an AAL are used to add lift not load capacity. Which would likely make a difference on how it rides. I added two oem leaves to mine for the extra weight and it rides great in my opinion and flexes well. I just don't have the lift.

I didn't know this was really a thing. It's my first 4x4 and I have never kept a anything past 160k miles until I bought a few Toyotas. I bring the truck in and say if it needs anything more than an oil change let me know. More than a year ago I had asked why it was so squeaky and everyone then said old age, but no one said ball joints and no one said this could happen with normal driving… At least until I showed them what happened. Now they have all kinds of advice after the fact. lol

My son felt so bad, and I had never heard of this happening with normal driving, but all's I asked was, is this story going to end with, "because I thought I could?" and he said he wished it was better than he was just backing into the drive way. Just glad neither of my boys were hurt. I can't complain- the truck has taken better care of me than I have of it. I've decided it needs to spend some time away from my auto mechanic friends and get to a shop that does truck loving- especially with my son taking it over...

Just noticed my old lugs have the extended shank so if I need to I can run those. Going to call wheelers tomorrow and see if they know since they sell the 1/4" spacer.

 

It really depends on how thick the mounting surface of your wheel is. If there are plenty of threads showing through the wheel with the spacer, and you're using extended shank lug nuts, you should be fine.

 

Really good actually! Temps around town are 130-150. Haven't done any long interstate drives though which is where it heated up a bit before.

When I put the gears in in a a few weeks it should help a ton also. Just have to put in my order with ecgs

sometimes with the steel wheels just the lip that is left from the hole punch rubs. Mine rub my calipers there (15s)

You think Nitro's with 881's is fine with a regular Dakar Leaf pack in the back? I have a Shell now too.
