Yeah, I guess defined benefit plans have gone the way of the dodo and buggy-whips.

Right out of school in the early 70s I was plant engineer of manufacturing company for 12 years, and spent my last 21 years of work with the State of Florida--both had decent defined benefit pension plans. Emphasis on had--the mfr company closed down in the mid-2000s, and on July 1, 2011 Florida converted their plan to defined contribution/401k plans for new employees.

Depreciation and recovery are legitimate TCO considerations

Yup, not really sure how you can separate cost of ownership from resale values.

There is a reason that German/European cars don't hold their value, and in some ways fall like rocks. The main reason being after a certain number of years the cost of basic maintenance items become astronomical (brake jobs, timing belts, etc). Add in the one off electrical issues and random gremlins one can understand why you cant give away 5yr old Mercedes s class, bmw 5 or 7 series or jaguars.

I just paid 29,000 for a 2015 DC OR 4x4. The Toyota dealer had a sticker on it for 32,980. I'm not sure why this one sat for more than a minute on the lot, but I'm glad it did! Only 29k miles on it too. Feel like I got a great deal.

If I never sell it, it has no impact on cost of ownership.

Maintinence costs don't impact resale value either. At least its not a causation relationship.

Value is what people think something is worth. People who buy high end, high performance vehicles usually have more money and want newer models. So they move on, the rest of the market devalues the vehicles so cost drops.

If your logic held true Tacomas would have miserable resale value, at least the heavily modified ones. Moded trucks are grossly expensive to maintain. Trucks period are expensive, even a stock Tacoma. It maintains it's value better than it's compact car counterparts.

I get the never buy a car new is one of the quickest ways to lose money, does this apply to Tacomas though?

Seeing others experiences with a year or two old models being so close to MSRP...

Yeah. Vehicles lose value compared to new costs. At least right now, 2nd Gens aren't worth more than the original purchase price. Now that could change when everyones 3rd Gens gets seased by Toyota for Differential leaks and Toyota has to do a massive buy back.

Tell me about it. On July 1 of 2013 I bought a '98 Mercedes SL500, one owner 53k miles, new top, full service records including the original sticker ($101,275). Paid them (an elderly couple from Palm Beach) $12k, $2k more than what they had been offered in trade for a new Lexus. I knew going in that if you can't wrench it yourself you can't afford it but said to myself "It's a $100,000 car (a Mercedes yet) with just 53k miles how bad can it be?"

Well to shorten things up the engine and drive train are bullet proof, 347 HP, 175 mph top speed, pass almost anything but a gas station--but the interior plastic bits (all and any including the headlight swtich, see photo below) were absolute crap (this is a car that was garaged its entire life before and while I owned it), cracking, crumbling and generally falling apart. My wife buys caramel stripe cookies from Dollar General that are structurally more sound than the insides of the damned headlamp switch.

Turns out the "green" party in Germany had (has?) so much political influence that laws were passed forcing automakers to use bio-degradable plastics--guess what? they do (degrade that is).

Sold the damned thing six weeks ago for $5990--and felt lucky to find someone willing to but it. Almost literally the most aggravating car I have ever owned. A blast to drive, always getting compliments; but a PITA to own.]

Never selling it increases the TCO because the total price you paid for the truck becomes a component of the "total cost of ownership". By selling it you would recover a portion of the initial expense--reducing the TCO.

They are not, they are no longer the "cars your can pass on to your grandchildren" like the ads used to say. If you want quality in a mainstream automobile buy a Lexus--but it's too bad about that fugly front end...

As soon as your plates go on it you have lost the difference between the "new" and "used" value--whatever that difference might be. Also consider that a low mileage one or two year-old used vehicle has already had its "shake-down" cruise--i.e. less aggravation, fewer trips to the dealership, recalls, TSBs, etc.

If you don't plan to ever sell, it really doesn't matter.

Like many on here, I just wanted to get a good deal when I bought my Tacoma back in 2010 cause I knew I would never sell it, even if I were to get another vehicle.

I got my '07 access cab TRD OR last month with 80,541 miles , single owner with excellent car fax records showing all the required service and maintanence, also taken to the same dealership for all service . The frame was done , leaf springs ,lower control arms , cat ... basically you could eat off the underbody of this truck. It has Yokohama geolandars with 9k miles (basically new) for 13,699 AND it's got the trd stickers too lol

The used car dealership did want 16k for it thou but I got them down to what I got it for . I tried to go lower but the guy said no way
