Put 255/85/16s on stock OR wheels and suspension

Sorry to add yet another "blah blah tires on blah blah wheels on blah blah liftkit" thread, but this one I feel is valuable because it's a second data point for fitting 33" skinnies on a stock 3g OR.

I got the idea for this from @Sandytaco14 who, in addition to posting the original "hey, this works" posts in a variety of threads, put up with me badgering him via PM for a little bit before I pulled the trigger. So thanks to you up front for the help.

I was generally happy with the performance of the stock wranglers on and Off-road, but wanted to fix a few things. 1) fill in some of the space in the wheel well. 2) get some ground clearance. The few times I've gotten stuck good have been cause my diff got hung up in some mud, where an extra inch would have saved me. 3) something that would make the wheel area "pop" a little more. With those things in mind, I started looking at suspension upgrades, wheels, tires, etc. I looked hard at the wider option but was put off by the amount of work and money I'd need to put in to even get the tires on the truck, then probably still have to trim and stuff. Then I became aware of the "pizza cutters" and kind of fell in love. Problem was, not many people had gone this route on the third gen yet, so it was risky. But oh well, live a little right? So here's the notes I've gathered and will continue to update so that people can have a thread about this size later on, something else that was lacking here.

The Truck: My 2016 Inferno TRD OR with 3 pedals.

The Tires: BFGoodrich KM2 255/85/16

The Wheels: Stock TRD Off-road

Backspace/offset/etc: Offset: 25mm and backspacing: 5'' (Thanks @Tacos2016 )

Suspension: Stock TRD Off-road, permanently added weight to truck: less than 100lbs

Notes:

* No rubbing anywhere driving around, including several turns into inclined driveways, railroad crossing at speed, potholes, my stupid driveway that is basically a curb, etc.

* Tires seem fine to me but I'm never a good judge of that. I can tell you they're loud enough that I notice it, but not loud enough that they annoy me over music.

* No discernible power loss, only thing I've noticed change in "everyday driving" is the braking distance increase a little

* They look amazing imo, and met all my goals. Letters out was a good choice for me.

* The inch and a half height you get over stock is noticeable and I feel it brings the height of the truck to a perfect level for me, a 6'1" beanpole.

* Tires clear everything lock to lock although I will need to do suspension before adding weight most likely.

* The closest thing to rubbing at any point is the UCA at full lock (see pics)- I think if I stuffed the front pretty good that may be a problem spot, but since most of what I have around me to wheel on is muddy trails and not rocks, I doubt I'll have immediate problems with it.

* I really think this is a size more people should consider for these trucks, it looks mean and gets you on a 33 without having to invest in suspension and wheels first. I'm using this as a stop gap until the wife approves my truck budget for the next 12 months when I can get my suspension as well.

Any side views? I was looking into getting some skinny 33"s on my OEM TRDOR wheels as well, except I have a suspension lift.

 

Oh I SUPPOSE I can go take more pictures of it... The drool puddle in my driveway is getting out of hand though

Ugh, AND you have a black soft topper that I want to buy as well. We could be twins.

 

I have had zero issues with uca clearance even at full stuff.

 

Mine are 32.75 as they sit in the driveway, at 34 psi

 

I could only see it being a problem if you were locked AND stuffed. Those pictures of mine where the UCA is close is at full lock. Wheels straight there's plenty of room cause...skinny lol

 

Jibbs, what did you do for your spare? Does a full size spare fit?

 

I've heard a spare will fit with a little effort (bending some bracket or something, iirc), but I'm actually still running the Wrangler spare underneath. Eventually I'll get a 5th KM2 and run it on a roof rack or something for clearance. Other stuff in the works first

This is great to hear. Definitely looking forward to more updates after you wheel and see if you have any rubbing...but this gives me another tire avenue to think about. thanks for posting up.

I don't think.ibe been to lock and stuffed but I've definitely been atleast 70% turned and stuffed. I'll go check tomorrow but I don't think I've come into contact with the uca.

On a scale of 1-10 1 being a gravel road and 10 being moab. I've been on atleast a 5 trail with these tires. Full flex. 40% tilt around a tree with literally an inch to spare, through mud, up a uneven 30%+ rock incline we call the slab. And all of this was done with full mobtown skids and sliders.



Edit: the only thing I rubbed on was my front mud flaps, it started to rub constantly when I put the skids on, after cracking a flap by a rock bending it back to my slider I took them off and it hasn't rubbed since.
