Two summers ago I was running CAT-5 for IP security cameras and couldn't take the hot SoCal heat in my attic. I installed a solar attic fan and it made a huge difference in the attic temps. Buy a quality one though. Last year I bought another one for my garage but a cheaper one. It was terrible. I sent it back and ponied up the $360 for another Natural Light 24w model. I added the temp cutoff switch so it isn't blowing on cold days. The one in the attic sucks the hot air out and the one in the garage blows cooler air in.

We had a major coon infestation several years ago. They were digging up the yard and gardens, tearing down bird feeders, and also tried nesting in the bunkie shed. I trapped 10 coons in three weeks. I had to administer a lead pill to another that was too large to fit in the trap.

I would exchange a full trap with a empty trap with a local commercial fisherman every other day, who would take the coons out to the islands that were being overrun by cormorants. Two problems solved.

Yeah! I bought a solar kit from HD last Summer when our AC died. It kicks on when the attic hits 85 degrees and shuts off when the sun sets. I have a converter to hardwire it into the house, but I haven't had time to get up there and wire it in. Once that's installed, I can keep it running into the evening hours to continue pulling heat out. I'm also replacing my soffits this Summer. The originals are gunked up with decades of old paint.

Does this make that big of a difference over the natural air flow in an attic?

Our roof was replaced two years ago after a pine tree fell in a storm. We had new decking put on before fresh shingles as the original stuff was warped. The roofers put the new decking on top of the old decking, so our roof is twice as thick now. Prior to this, there was no ridge vent. I checked the attic temp last summer and it was 135 degrees. At peak heat in the daytime the inside ceiling was 91 degrees. Our 1994 AC unit failed. I don;t have an infrared thermometer, so I've not been able to check the attic since the fan was installed, but it made a noticeable difference inside the house. Prior to install, the attic was unbearable beyond 10 minutes. After install, I can get up there and deal with whatever I need to do without thinking I'm going to faint from heat. I'm not being melodramatic, it was seriously that hot up there prior to installing the fan.

Okay I'm about to build an outside water heater closet and softener on back covered porch. Seems the dyi from yrs ago set deck on top of future brick lug. I don't like the siding buried below deck. Anybody have suggestions on how to raise siding to deck height?

Idk why brick lug drops down. Inside the slab is all smooth no drops.tmp_6108-20170512_154032-1386665699.jpg

U could nail a piece of baseboard to it
Pulling the deck boards and cutting siding will make a nasty edge that would need to be covered with baseboard anyway

It does. I have cathedral ceilings, stucco siding with 4 large vents on either side of the house. It enhances the natural flow. Since it's solar it runs all day without using additional energy.

I took this picture when I disconnected the solar panel to add the thermal switch.

Hmm, interesting. I'm in the -15 to -20 zone. You must be around Randolph? Yes, we aren't going to compare snowfall or average winter temps

In law is having a contractor build an aviary but he is putting in his own doors. He wants it to be to code. I've always been told wood can't touch the conference slab below. What would be the best way for him to put in the door(s)

Pressure treated wood can be in contact with concrete or you can isolate non-treated wood with some type of gasket or peel and stick

You mean the doors themselves will contact the concrete or the framing or door sill or what ?

    Framing/sill I assume.

We use sill gasket under conventional sill plates in framing which is basically a foam gasket that seperates the wood from the concrete , with the door sill I would probably wrap the underside of the sill with Vycor peel and stick or similar

Having said that I know some jurisdictions call for a PT bottom sill no matter what

He did ask me about that peel and stick but it was made by Henry's which made me ask in the first place.

There are a bunch of different peel and stick products , I like the Grace Vycor because it sticks really well , folds easily and isn't very thick
