OP is chained to the Tacoma, chained to a radiator, in the dealership basement waiting to be surgically conjoined to the tailpipe of a Prius.

Well this thread is off the rails...

In other news, I brought my 2016 TRD OR in for 25k service last week and showed them my rear diff is leaking in 4 different spots. I had emptied my truck out and was fully prepared to try to persuade them to get me a 4runner loaner (but also ready to go hit some sweet jumps in a Yaris if it came to that). There happened to be a corporate level Toyota rep at my dealer that day to go over the details of the recall, which my truck is not included in. The decision was made to re-torque the bolts and send me on my way. They said a fix should be available mid-June and that I'm the first truck they've seen with the issue.

Took my 2017 Tacoma in for 5000 miles service this mornin, they check rear end no leaks, tightened bolt....What got me they used what look like a Milwaukee Impact Driver, not a torque wrench. They also messed up in my fav. and did a oil change which wasn't include in the 2017 toyotacare package. NO Charge. Saw on bill, they put in 6qts of 5w20 instead of 0w20. So all in all am happy.

I think that most all who brought their trucks in that were held were told they have to leave it for the parts to arrive and to have repair verification as to how the repair was to be done. nothing was mentioned about a safety hold as far as I can understand. so basically the truck was held until parts and instructions arrived. if I was Gung Ho into keeping my truck I would tell the service advisor to call me when you have the parts on hand and at that point make a appointment for repair.

I am curious, "leaking" or just a bit of "weepage"--if the former the fluid level should have been/should be checked, if just weeping a bit it was likely no big deal to begin with...

I think its legit to use 5w20 in the 2.7l engine if necessary, but to use the 0w20 on the next next OCI says so in the owners manual, I would make sure 0w20 was used next time tho and in the future

I think also Toyota is using a thinner 75w85 GL5 synthetic gear oil now which would make it weep past gaskets easier than the thicker 75w90 or 80w90 syn oils.

Mine had a spot or 2 where it seeped/weeped at one time. Took mine in yesterday and they torqued the bolts and sent me on my way. Was at the dealership about an hour.

Just using synthetic base stock increases the potential for leaking as its molecules though more consistent in size are smaller than those of dino juices; and seal materials must be selected to deal with that and other synthetic oil characteristics. This is where the "myth" of changing to synthetic oil would make an engine leak--except that 40 years ago it was not a myth.synthetic could weep from gasketed joinings that had been tight, leak from places that had been weeping, and breakdown incompatible sealing materials.

Most vehicles since the late 90s have been built to tolerate synthetic lubricants, however changing a high mileage engine over to synthetic can still cause some weeping from gaskets, and actual leaking from worn seals...

could be, but the viscosity of the 75w85 is like water compared to the 75w90 syrupy I have noticed this personally, maybe this its the whole reason for the recall on some and weepage on others. if Toyota dropped the ball on the gasket material they are making it up by having the recall, and are addressing the others in a prompt manner to get it resolved quickly. at no cost to the owners, only problem that has arisen is that the owners might have to use a loaner car till the fix is resolved, I can think of worse things that could happen in life.

notice also today, 5000 mile care from toyota, they never check the level of fluid in rear end, just tightened the bolts...also thought u-joint or drive shaft was suppose to be retorqued, which wasn't done.....

Had my first oil change yesterday at 6500 miles.Truck is a year old they said nothing about recall. Also traded in a 2004 ram that I bought new that had a standing recall on the air bag that I didn't take in for the repair nothing said about that I'm sure they new it had a recall on it by checking the vin number.

I had problems with my T4R a few months ago--both diffs replaced with low miles. Said the oil was too thin--they filled with 75-140 syth.

That is nothing, absolutely zero/zilch/nada nothing; 99.44% of the cars on the road have some sort of misting/weeping like that.

Nonetheless "I" would have re-torqued the carrier fasteners AND checked the fluid level--though for full disclosure I have to say that more than one of those that know me would select "anal", "obsessive", and/or "compulsive" to describe my nature--I cannot help it, I am an Aries ME for crying out loud...
