    ^THIS

That's about all you can do. Regardless of what order you do it in, one price will always influence the other. You can only negotiate on the bottom line. Keep in mind, most states tax based on the price difference of the new vs. trade in (trade in allowance). I.e. if you are buying a $20k truck and the dealer is paying you $10k for your trade, you only pay tax on $10k.

The worst nightmare for a salesman/dealer is having a customer that:
    A. Knows EXACTLY what they want
    B. Has a damn good idea of what the ACTUAL invoice price is.
    C. Can walk away at any time.

Do your research and be prepared to walk away. Go in the last week of the month with your own financing ready to go (get pre-approved for $XX,XXX by your bank). If the dealer isn't willing to get to a price you are willing to pay, thank them for their time and come back next month.

So true!! I just traded my taco for a TRD pro 4Runner, and I am the nightmare customer you stated!! I let them know A B and C, but they were really great to my surprise. I waited 2months and they didn't pull any shady stuff last minute, in fact it was the easiest car buy ever! I bought my taco there, and it was more a much more intense buying experience. I think if they see you know what you want and won't compromise, they won't try to shove stuff off on you.

^^ exactly this. People want instant gratification and they pay the price for it. Take your time and visit a few dealers (or at least call a few) and be willing to walk away.

2017 Tacoma TRD Sport Inferno Manual
This was me when I bought my 2015, got everything I wanted but the manual... As the weeks went by all I could think about was the manual. No matter what I always kept coming back to the idea. After a year and a half I said fuck it, I'm getting a manual. Best decision EVER. I got the 2017 in manual and I love to drive it. I cant wait to drive, I look for excuses to drive it. I made my daily driving experience 100 times better. If you can afford it financially to maybe take a small hit... do it.

You are going to love it. Its hard to describe how just that one change, completely transforms the truck and whole experience. Also the short box on the manual is awesome, I can finally park in normal parking stalls without sticking out or having to get within an inch of the other person in front / behind me.
