IMO you should be fine with stock tires as long as you dont exceed the load capacity. So i think its around 1100 lbs, so dont tow that trailer with more than 600 lbs of cargo. All the weights are listed its sort of a pain in the ass to figure it all out, but stock tires wont be a problem here they are sized carry stock weight capacities.

If you wanted a bonus, and you pulled a trailer a lot, you could go down one size in tire, lowering the truck slightly, but adding torque. This is like a really cheap version of re gearing, and would yield a tow benefit.

With that all said, i pull a 700lb tongue weight 6500lb trailer with my 33's. But i also have Nitro 4.88 gears. Probably a little too much info but I hope it helps you.

 

Thanls for thw adviseI'm going to tow it quite often. Where I live in maryland is relatively flat and don't plan on going to the mountains. I was just wondering about the stockers since they only have 20k on them. When i need new I'm gettin toyo at2. The SL at2 has batter load rating then the stock size. Plus smaller tires wouldnt loom to good with 3in loft lol

 

I run LT285/70R17 toyos, and I have the 4.88 regear. Truck is sweet setup like that. I have no lift which should be better for towing but I needed CMC for sure. Brand new i'll report back here after i've used it to haul a little bit and i'll let everyone know how that goes.

If money is tight get a used P2. I've had mine for 4 years and love it. All the functionality is there.

 

The "Towing Bible" is a fantastic resource. I have referred to it a lot. However, this weekend my eyes might have bit off more than my truck can chew. I bough a 2006 21rs keystone outback. This trailer has a dry hitch weight of 375lbs and dry weight of 4585lbs. My towing vehicle is a 2006 Toyota Tacoma TRD 4dr. with trailer brakes and firestone airbags. I go to one specific place in the mountains that has a natural spring so I do not carry water. Typically propane, toys, and personal goods. We make the trip multiple times throughout the summer. Will my Tacoma be adequate for this task?

 

don't bring much with you and you'll be OK. load that thing to the max, and your truck, and you'll have no safety margins.

 

I have a 2017 Tacoma DOUBLE CAB TRD OFF-ROAD automatic. I installed a Scan Gauge II a few months ago to check my tranny temps while towing. It can be 50 degrees or even cooler outside NOT towing driving at highway speeds and my tranny is running 190-195 degrees. For those of you running a tranny gauge, what is your temp running under normal highway/freeway driving? My readings seem high based on past vehicles. I have had two SUVs before that would normally run with stock coolers around 150 degrees. Thanks for any info.

 

My 08 ran "hot" towing. I invested in a secondary cooler, and never looked back. IIRC my normal temps were too high for my comfort also. $60 is cheap insurance, when you consider the cost of the truck.

 

I put a Hopkins Insight brake controller on my truck for future use....I knew I would need one. It is a nice setup. I mounted the brain on the inside of the driver kick panel, the switch next to my toggle switches and the display above the left dash surround. It has 5 sensitivity settings and an emergency override.

Good morning TW and Towing Bible community.

Me?...First time towing a TT cross country. Starting from Chicago and ending up in Los Angeles in early June.
First I like to thank everyone for their inputs and opinions, I've been researching how to tow properly like ALL DAY, yesterday(probably more until our trip begins/ends)

Second, I will be cutting thru Denver down to New Mexico and Arizona so i can avoid the Rockies and any possible hauling troubles. If anyone has ideas or better routes please let me know about that. Even any nice stops, parks, sites, landmarks etc...would be appreciated. Tips are great....like should i carry half capacity on my waters and propane, and try to find hook ups? What types of tools and camping gear(for the TT) are needed.

I've seen some cool water filters....anyone have a preference or are they all the same?

My equipment is 2014 dbl cab lng bed 4x4 sr5 w/ tow pkg, 23 ft. TT Startcraft Autumn Ride 235FB, Firestone Ride-Rite airbags(not yet installed), Tekonsha P3 brake controller, CIPA universal towing mirrors. Should I consider getting the transmission temp gauge?

TT weighs ~4100-4200# dry. GVW 6500#. Tongue is ~465#. Ill be having a payload of ~400#. Seems like I'm in the clear, just un sure how the ride will go...also what gear should i be in during decents and climbs.

 

I would highly recommend a temp gauge.

 

I'd definitely plan on keeping that 235FB as empty as possible, but if you're going to boondock, you'll need water, and food/beverages, and regardless you'll need clothes, and other such gear. I think your '400 lbs payload' is rather optimistic. or is that what you plan on putting in the truck, not the trailer ?

The gauge is nice, but I'd DEFINITELY add a aux trans cooler.

So does mine. I should have said, second aux cooler. Lowered my trans temps by up to 50°!
