I have been driving a manual pretty much for the past 30 years and have owned many different types and brands. I have owned my truck for a month and have had this situation happen twice now. When I have parked on an incline (forwards once and backwards once) the truck has rolled 10-15 feet from where I parked it. I have never really used my emergency brake in the past and have started the routine but have forgotten twice and both times it rolled. When I have got on it pretty hard I did not feel the clutch slipping.

    Anyone ever had this experience?

? you don't use a parking brake in your MT's? guess it's time you start that habit like 100%of the time.

i guess you could leave it in 1st or R on a flat surface and hope for the best, but why would you? pull the parking brake, done & done.

btw, no it's never happened to me, because i always use the parking brake.

Always use the ebrake on a standard transmission mission. This is why.

Just never have in the past! I do all the time now but it was weird seeing my truck halfway down my driveway when I came out to leave. I sometimes even go outside at night to make sure it is pulled!

I had an old 91 toyota pickup that had this behavior. On steep inclines it would slowly surge forward a few inches at a time. The tr4uck was a 4 cyl and the motor did not have enough friction or compression to hold back the weight of the truck. My dad had an old chevy with a 350 small block, 4 speed and it never had this problem.

I wonder if the Atkinson cycle with some of the valves still open is maybe why it does this?

It's a good idea to use the parking brake regularly anyway as the more you actuate it the less likely it is to seize up over time. It helps keep all the parts free and moving versus letting it sit unused for months at a time.

there are many old schoolers around here with MT's... all with long MT operating histories. many have some minor growing pains with these new trucks. I'm guessing you need to consider your vehicle a very modern one with tons of tech. treat it accordingly... the basic low tech we may prefer in these trucks is kind of an illusion, and the software and sensor technology runs things in your truck same as the AT's. we just get to shift.

so somehow I'm making a connection to this from your use of the parking brake. hmmm, time for happy hour. o_O

I love the truck and all the technology it has along with it! I am adapting to using the parking brake! I actually don't even mind the throttle lag and so far I am getting about 20mpg so I am very happy!

Curious about others habits. Been driving MTs for nearly 20 years and while I always use the parking brake, I typically leave the vehicle in neutral. Do most people leave it in gear with the parking brake on?

I have never owned an Automatic in my life but have always used the handbrake plus leave in gear.

I do the same. Driving since '71, and was taught to always park it in gear.

I've always used an e-brake and also left it in 1st when parked for redundancy if the e-brake fails.

    This plus the parking break.

However I have a similar story. The first week i had this truck i could not get used to the location of the parking break. This was my 4th Toyota and all the others had the old t-handle break. I showed up to work one morning and it was cold so i sat in the truck with it idling in neutral playing with all the fancy knobs and doodads. When I went into my office I must have left it in neutral and forgot to pull the break. Looked out my office window a half hour later and my truck hand rolled halfway across the parking lot.. thankfully I was there early and no one had shown up to work so my truck only hit a curb and stopped. Boy did I feel stupid. Still do.

My '13 is an auto and I despise the foot activated parking brake.

Me too. That one experience has me paranoid about forgetting again. I always walk away from.my truck and the go back and double check.
