Strong odor from the exhaust

I have a 09 Tacoma and park it in a garage. When I start the vehicle in the morning and the engine is cold there is a strange odor that comes out of the exhaust. I can't describe it but it is a strong odor that I have never smelled before. I have a roommate who has smelled it and she said the same thing. It only happens when the engine is cold. After the engine warms up I don't smell it anymore. I called the Toyota dealer and they told me to change the gas I put in the truck. I was using 76 and switched to Shell. Still happens. Any suggestions to what might be causing what i'm smelling?

 

i wonder if its just a weird mixture of exhaust and condensation?

have you put any different exhaust on the truck?

 

my truck does this too on cold start-ups, smells like its running really rich or something. i have the 2.7l engine but i think you're experiencing the same smell as i am. i think it maybe the computer telling the engine to run rich to reach operating temp faster. just a guess

 

Is it a petrolium odor like gas or is it just plain stink.

 

I have not changed my exhaust system. It's the one that came with the truck. I am running super unleaded gas. I thought that would make a difference as far as engine performance. My roommate says it's smells like wet paint.

Wet paint smell? That's really new lol... even with my straight 3" on a sbc 327... it smells like, well exhaust (running way to rich too).

I wonder if you got something in the exhaust...

 

How would switching to a lower octane help at all?

 

Could be some of the additives they put in the gas. Try some Seafoam to clean it out.

 

Catalytic converter is my guess. I have a new one on a old truck and this sucker stinks worse than any other one I've ever smelled. Bummer because I like to drive with the rear window open. I don't think there's anything you can do other than drive it till it doesn't smell anymore. It doesn't help that you have 4 of the damn things on there.
