DiY back up camera relocate with spare tire swingout

Well here goes. I added a @CBI Offroad Fab high clearance rear bumper with swingout. The swingout blocked the factory camera. So I purchased an @Pelfreybilt camera relocate bracket and moved it.

First step is to remove the tailgate cover. Do this by removing the 16 torx screws.

Then remove the camera assembly with the two 10mm bolts. And unclip the wire harness.


Next unclip the factory wire harness from its three plastic retainers and run it below the tailgate and have it poke out by the hinge of the swingout. Now lengthen the harness to the desired length. The wires are 20 gauge wires. I lenghtened, then put a wire loom over the entire length of the harness and taped it up.

Then take the camera lens out of the factory bracket with the tiny two screws.

I had to slighly modify the @Pelfreybilt bracket as the camera has two tiny plastic parts that hung down lower than the precuttout on the bracket. I used a triangle file to make the two small grooves in the bottom. The camera fit perfectly then into the bracket.


Next install the camera using the tiny two screws.


Now take the bracket and camera and attach to the swing arm. Remember that the factory location is off center so attach this bracket off center also. I drilled the swing arm out then used two self tapping bolts to attach.


Now hook up the wire harness to the camera and zip tie the harness to the swing arm. Make sure there is enough slack for The swing arm to function with out binding the harness.


Put you tail gate cover back on. Close the swing arm and check to make sure your camera works.


Last step...pour your self a highball and admire how handy you are.

 

Nice write up. I'd suggest checking that the camera works and is in the desired position before drilling and mounting it, though.

 

Yeah. A good idea would be to use like double sided tape and stick it in place and check location. I layed out white rocks on the driveway, then backed up until I could see them in the camera, then moved them to the edge of the blue lines and the red line. This was a decent way to check if everything was lined up.

The red line is perfect for my STOP! zone. It lines up perfectly with the plain of the spare tire.

Subbed for a good write-up and execution. I really like the CBI rear bumper and would perform the same mod. Would it pay to build a small shroud above/around the camera connector? It seems kind of exposed in your pictures.

It's only exposed when the swing arm is open and the fold down camp table is down. It is fairly protected when the truck is closed up for driving. Although I did have the same thought as you.

red line is pretty damn accurate. About 4 inches behind the tire. I can live with it

does this just leave a hole in your tailgate then?

 

A hole in the tailgate handle. But you can't really see it.

 

Just regular 20ga wiring? what connectors did you use etc. Worried about vid quality.
