Sorry didn't mean to knock it! I'm having a lot of fun with the 4 banger and it's making the unknown ETA for the recall easier.

took mine in yesterday for 5000 mile sevice, rearend past no leaks, got free oil change, they drain oil out of habit at 5000 mile mark, so am not complaining at all. and to be honest other than the way truck will down shift with curse contol on going down hill than right back up a hill, (it loses it mind}. Only real complaint i have with my Tacoma.....

Shoot, I didn't think the OR's were affected by this. Is your VIN one of the chosen or did you just look at your diff and see similar weeping?

Pop-n-lock tailgate. New radio knobs. Rear step.
I have an OR that is not on the recall list. The rear diff is sweating/weeping. Maybe they'll expand the recall at some point.

How and who decides if a particular VIN gets recalled.Seems like Toyota is winging it and arbitrarily deciding what VIN #'s get recalled.

Trucks with no leaks getting recalled and trucks with leaks not getting recalled.

Nope, my VIN isn't on the list. I checked the website and it said green checkmark, no recalls.

I saw the posts on here and decided to check, and immediately saw multiple spots of weeping. Good times.

It's been 2 1/2 weeks since the recall announcement.

So far on TW we've seen posts of dealers saying yes, it's a leak/seep/weep; it's not a leak unless it's wet to the touch; it's normal to have some seeping; it's "outside influence"; it's normal, it's from when the metal was cast; not sure, have to ask Corporate.

So basically, this tells me they haven't figured it out yet and/or Toyota Corporate is just not communicating well.

Brought mine in last week. Dealer said it was on the recall. No signs of leaking. Said out of 150 Tacomas they have serviced so far they've only had to keep 1 of those so far.

Are there any official Toyota dealership mechanics on the forum or anyone else with knowledge that the fix kits are in for the recall yet? Want the rev1 TSB done but don't want to risk getting my truck impounded.

Why did they change the rear end anyway? (From the one in pre-16 trucks)

I don't think you get a 5k oil change. I know you'll get one at 10k. I took mine in at 5k & all they did was rotate tires, & check fluid levels. Wasn't going to wait for 10k so changed myself at 5k. At least that's my story :)

because improvements in efficiency and manufacturing

why does anything change ? products have product life cycle and are always tweaked and changed.

the issue here is toyota engineering specified some exact and perfect parameters, and the
supplier just messed up a particular batch of something and did it out of spec. it happens

Well just got off the phone with Toyota Corp after a 40 min conversation about my options here. I am currently in a Camry rental with my truck grounded at the dealership I work for. I am moving out of state end of May beginning of June so this recall has my entire plan F'ed up. This is what I learned from them:

    1) Remedy is coming 2nd-3rd week of June, no sooner, and politely they do not care if I need my truck to move out of state they recommend I keep it there till its fixed.

    2) I can take my truck but its between me and the dealership at that point to let me (Which they will I work there). I will be able to complete the recall in June at my new location but if there is any damage as a result of me taking it they will refuse to cover the recall and its on me to pay for it, or some other nightmarish situation. Also, she seemed to feel like if I paid to put a whole new differential in my truck they couldn't say for sure if my truck would still have an open safety recall making it, which I asked hypothetically as a worst case scenario.

    3) I might be able to pay to upgrade my Camry rental to a truck which would solve some problems, but i would still need to drive back to MF california to get my truck in June a 40 hour round trip...

Going to speak with my SA today and see what he thinks, I am basically cluster f$%^ed into waiting till June unless I want to roll the dice with thousands of dollars of truck-ness.

I have to laugh because 4 months ago i pointed out these leaks to my technician and got a mundane explanation of the difference between a leak and seap and how not a big deal it was, now all of a sudden I might die in my truck and cant have it back, while thousands of other taco owners are cruising on the road with known leaks and toyota dosent seem worried about that till June, makes no sense to me

how much is it leaking now ?

if not much, then just drive it and keep an eye on the diff every single time
you park it OR every 50 miles....to make sure it's not draining hard

if it is actively leaving spots every time you park, that is when to stop driving it 100%

just get it fixed at any toyota dealer after you move

roll the dice and drive it

but check it all the time. get a little mat you can use to get on your knees all the time now (cleanly and on wet roads)
to physically eyeball it all the time. no active drips, you have tons of time. it is when it loses fluid the thing grenades

no more than 50 miles between checks !!!!
