After test driving two, I am sure of it. The first one was just like I jumped in a brand new modernized 2nd gen. The 2nd one did feel a little sluggish in 1st-2nd, but then again I was shifting it like my 2nd gen. The 2nd truck I drove also had a grand total of 3 miles on it so the computer was still adjusting.

Toyota has sold more that a quarter of a million 3rd gen Tacomas. A small minority of those Tacoma owners post on this website. An even smaller number of them have issues with their trucks. So at the end of the day the number of people that have issues with their trucks are the exception, not the rule. Yet, there are numerous people on this website who act as if the issues present on their trucks are present in all or nearly all 3rd gen Tacomas.

Now I want to ask you an honest question. If you have been following this forum for a year, and aware of the multitude of issues that may be present in the 3rd gen Tacomas, why did you still buy one? That is what I just can't figure out. You also claimed that you couldn't get fair trade in value for your truck. When I asked you what you had been offered, crickets.

One of the first things I noticed driving the 3rd gen compared to the 2nd gen was how much smoother it shifts, and the throws are shorter as well. Not that those things make a huge difference to me, it is a truck after all. It was definitely a pleasant surprise though.

100% agree. The transmission is very smooth compared to the 2nd gen. Night and day difference I noticed immediately before even starting the test drive. The 1st to 2nd shift in my '14 has always been rough from day one. The URD short throw shifter made it feel less like stirring pudding, and changing my driving habits made that shift feel better. Shifting on the '14 was never perfect, but I didn't care because it is a truck not a sports car just like you mentioned. The 3rd gen was smooth out of and into gear and down shifts with rev matching were easy. I did not notice a difference in rev matching as noted by some. There was some throttle lag, but maybe I was just used to it from my '14 (that has throttle lag too and the timing just becomes habit). Clutch in while pulling out of gear, blip throttle just as it pops out, delayed response, revs climb, moderate/light pressure on the shifter, and it slides into the next gear. I felt the 3rd gen required less "feel" to get the timing right. I can always tell when I'm a little off in RPM in the '14. No grinding, but you can hear/feel the synchros working. No big deal since that's what they are for and yeah, it's a truck.

I may not even bother with the short throw shifter on the new one since, as you noted, the throw is noticeably shorter.

I apologize as this is quite off topic.

To reiterate what has been already said: "Don't be hatin'!" EVERY vehicle has issues, EVERY vehicle has recalls, and EVERY vehicle has people that love it and that hate it. When you read about all the problems that are being complained about with the Tacoma take some of it with a grain of salt.

Only you can prevent buyers remorse!

Noticed right away also, buttery smooth compared to both of my previous 2nd Gens in all gears except Reverse.

I was buying into people saying that the complainers all come here and so I thought Toyota can't possibly let me down! I guess it turns out that the complainers have a case!

So how much did they offer you for your trade? I mean if you are unhappy with your truck you should get something else. You've got a '17 TRD Sport if memory serves. You should be able to get at least 33k from the dealer.

Last fall (2016), I looked at a '16 DCSB TRD Sport on the used side of the local Honda dealership. Had right around 7,000 miles. Could've bought it for just over $30k. First thought was, what's wrong with this picture? Had a friend that worked there, and called him one evening. Said the original owner had traded it in for a new Ridgeline.

After a little more research, I now question that.......
