I am researching purchasing a 2017 Tacoma DC TRD Sport or Limited but was wondering if it came with a factory security system, that works like an aftermarket alarm? I see on my dealers inventory that it comes with a "security system", but also has the VIP RS-3200 Plus as an option. Do I need to add this on when I purchase my truck, or does it already have one factory installed. I am so confused. Also, is it true that you cannot order the factory tonneau cover after the fact if you dont order it with the truck when buying new? Also, does all the new 2017 Tacomas come with the Toyota Safety Sense features (not just the Limited), or is that being reserved for the 2018, since I have read it is supposed to be standard by the end of 2017. If I am going to drop 40k on a new truck, I want to be sure what I am getting before I am disappointed. I am coming from a Frontier but dont want another Nissan, even though it has been good to me, most of the time...I want the reliability and resale value of the Toyota, even though I plan to keep it forever!

Alarm is an option. Tonneau cover not available post sale from dealer. Add if possible prior. It was not available when I ordered my TRDP 17

Alarm is standard on some models, the RS3200 option is to add glass break sensor. Limited will have alarm, I think (but not sure) the sport comes with it as well.
No it doesn't act / work like aftermarket alarms, it works like aftermarket alarms of 20 years ago. No tilt, no 2 way remote, no shock, no accessory circuits. The alarm is archaic even by American car manufacturer standards.
Remote start will also be useless on all options. Ie remote start will kill engine when you open the door, this it true even using aftermarket, or the plugin module to the factory alarm.

The toyota safety sense is for 2018 models only, this late in the game i would wait unless a dealer is willing to discount a 17 for you. Otherwise you will likeley be paying the same amount and getting more for it if you wait a few months, like mentioned above, there is an alarm. How it works and what sets it off i could not tell you. There are much better options in my opinion for the same or less money regarding the toneau. Such as backflip fibermax/hd. Or the undercover.

I expect you will pay more for an 18 as it is my understanding they will have the safety since every be needs to text and drive stuff and that's going to cost something.

My wifes car already has all the safety items that the Toyota Safety Sense will come with, plus the Blind Spot Monitor which i didnt think i used, but when i drive her car, it does help. I wanted my truck to have the same safety things so my wife feels comfortable driving it, since she has already expressed to me that the Tacoma is too big for her to drive, and i am trying to convince her otherwise. Maybe i will wait until 2018, or i will buy a TRD sport with technology package or a limited. I am still on the fence about the tonneau cover since i saw one the other day and noticed the rubber seems in between the 3 panels looked like they were shrinking and deformed.

I have the factory alarm w/o the RS-3200 and it's a simple alarm that triggers the truck horn when the door is opened once the alarm is set. I added a tilt sensor just in case someone trys to steal my wheels by lifting it.

That was correct a few months ago, and seems to remain correct albeit someone here managed to buy all the parts for a tonneau.

It's also possible to find someone selling one off their truck and meet up to swap all the parts

It's on the TRDs, so also on the OR and Sport trims.

That's a bit extreme; even though Toyota disallows takeover (and so the engine quits) the truck is still warm on cold mornings and cool on hot afternoons. Anything that makes my wife happy is FAR from useless.

Also, while some dealers seem to have figured out how to put a Camry or Tundra OEM remote start into a Tacoma, unless something's changed there's no OEM unit specific to Tacomas.

Strictly speaking, you can cut your rails to fit the tonneau. Typically the seller wants uncut rails and thus the swap.

Its my understanding that you can make the cuts on the rails if needed, so they don't need to be swapped. But who would want to keep cut rails with out the cover?

No way... Off-Road costs more than Sport any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Especially if you're comparing apples to apples; i.e. if they both have the premium tech package.

Off-Road comes with upgraded shocks, Crawl Control, diff locker, 4-wheel drive (standard)... all that cost more $$$.

Remote start is not useless. Yes, it kills the engine, but it warms up the interior and gets snow/ice melted off of windows, so not really useless.

Go price out a couple Sports and ORs of identical configurations and get back to us with your results. You'll find they're the same.

FYI this might help: 3rd Gen Tacoma Model/Package/Option Costs Master List

Now if you're claiming the cost to Toyota is higher for the OffRoad, that may be true. The OR does have more stuff in it. Invoice and MSRP prices are the same as the Sport though, so our cost is the same and that's the only cost most of us care about.

I thought about the TRD off road, but like my truck I have now, it has the black fender flares and below the front bumper is also black, I just hate that on my current truck and just want it color keyed on the new one.

I have been looking on Craigslist here over the past 2 months daily and have not seen anyone selling their factory tonneau cover but I did like some of the after market options that are available like the Bakflip and Extang. I didnt want to spend $1k plus to buy all the parts necessary to have the factory cover. If bought with the truck, its like $650, I believe.

My wifes car has the BSM and RCTA also and it does work and very helpful, especially when you are parked between 2 huge vehicles (like Tacomas, lol) and cannot see when reversing out of the stall. Thats why it would be a must when I buy the new truck.

Consider posting a WTB in the relevant regional subforum here, also there used to be a somewhat active OEM tonneau buy/sell thread around here somewhere.

Don't forget to look at the price for painted flares and front bumper trim.

I supposed it also depends on how much you like or dislike the Sport's decorative hood skewp.

Me, I like the black flares and trim, but I also bought a white truck so the stormtrooper color scheme works. :)
