Hi guys, this is my first post here. I have been lurking the site for quite some time and have learned a lot from the member's experience. I really appreciate it.

Today we went to a local dealer here in Virginia, financing already made with the credit union. Me and my wife are looking at a 2010 Tacoma 4X4 TRD Pkg with Towing capabilities in Black Sand Pearl. Salesman was nice and courteous we have exchanged e-mail several times. We have agreed for him to sell the truck at $ 100 over invoice (based on TMV from Edmunds.com)

    Edmunds TMV: $28,549
    Dealer Invoice: $28,566
    MSRP: $31,270

When we crunched the final numbers it sumed up to 31,500 someting OTD. I looked at the breakdown, they included TDA for 450 something. I asked what TDA is thay said it is what they call Toyota Dealer Advertising. I had the feeling that whoever is above him is yanking my chains. I feel sorry for the saleman, he was being straight with me but helpless to do anything.

Finally the guy above him (old guy) came out and gave the speech of they are not selling trucks at a loss. He even asked me if I had a business and willing to loose money. In other words we walked away.

    What say you guys?

Never ever pay sticker price much less more than sticker price with all the tax and other b.s.

I've seen those before. I'm not sure about the amount, but the fee itself is not uncommon.

Its not only the $400. The original number we had was $ 29,709 OTD. The way they manipulated the numbers ended up to $31 K plus.

I got a quote from another Toyota dealer and the salesman quoted me for the same configuration except its Super white at $ 29,500 OTD. Hows that for shopping around?:D

Oh and the TDA? (Toyota Dealer Advertisement) the 2nd salesman told me that is actually already included in the invoice price of every car they are selling. Pulling it out "again" to jack up the price is just bad practice.

The dealer invoice you listed is bogus; you did the right thing by walking. Do some more homework & you will see. Good luck. Check this sites tools out, it has saved me alot of $.

I would have done the same thing. With the recent events involving Toyota AND the economy, they could have done better. Out the door my truck was way under sticker.

EDIT**** I have a feeling you will be getting a phone in the near future asking you to come back

They are not losing any money. They get paid by Toyota for every car/truck they sell. They get even more when they sell more. If they sell one they get one amount, five it goes up, ten even more and so on. Not sure of the amounts, I have family that works for Volvo, Honda Hundi and GMC, they say all of them work that way. They also get money based on the customer surveys, that is why they ask you to contact them if you can't give them excellent on all questions. I would find another dealer.

Thanks Buzz, I told them that I understand that they need to make money too. (Thats business I know) Its just wrong when they treat honest hardworking cutomers like fools.

Custom body work...boat trailer came of hitch, hit tailgate and Rammed stick thru lower valance while towing boat....hmmm, Maybe I should get a new boat?!?
IMO, you did the right thing, sometimes price isn't the only reason one would shop at a particular dealer/store, but rather the service and the honest/fair dealing! I know from experience, if the service is right and the dealer/store is upfront and ethical (honest) then I am willing to pay a little more...Golden Rule baby, treat everyone like they're kings and your #1 customer, it will pay you dividends and loyalty (talk about referrals)!!!

I will just say I'm sorry. Another dealer had willingly accepted my offer. I am sorry.

Get yourself emails from 3 dealers with invoices and prices OTD. Just keep bouncing emails from them back and forth. Make sure you have the invoices or the dealer will say their car has this or that. Got my 09 trd off road otd for 28700. Times r tough for Toyota now, use it to ur advantage. I typed this on my iPhone, so forgive spelling and grammar. Good luck!

I would of walked too...or tell them you charge $500 for them to put their dealer sticker and license plate bracket on your truck as an advertising fee.....forget the folks that think you screwed yourself out of a Tacoma for $400......they're suckers.

Definitely bad practice. The only thing OTD would have been me!! I'd take my business elsewhere. Especially after the speech from the old guy. Actually, I would have laughed at the old guy and walked out at that point in time.

    Good for you!!

    Cheers.
