This is the genuine Toyota part. Replaces the plastic housing that Toyota cheaped out on and put on the Tacomas. Just have to swap out the center filter post.

 

is the plastic cap cracking on people?

what are they normally?

 

Something I would love to know about these, would this guard better against seizing up than the plastic version?

 

I paid something like $22 for mine from Amazon. Didn't have to swap the center post. It was identical to the stock one. Did my 10k oil change 1k ago. All works fine.

 

That's the concern, especially from folks who pay third party places (IE: Jiffy Lube) to do their oil changes.

Normal price around the internet is ~$22-$25.

Good price, as when I bought mine off of Amazon the cheapest I found was $19.50 shipped.

 

I haven't heard any such thing blkbelt42, the plastic oem should last about as long as the plastic oem oil filler cap.
But for the record, I replaced mine at 5k, I now have 20k miles works like a charm, so did the plastic, but metal makes me feel comfy, and it should transfer heat in cap better imo.

I seriously doubt it will JeffreyB, nothing beats King Kong when he's determined to ruin your day!

Thank you. I've been thinking about getting an aluminum housing for the girlfriends Rav4. First oil change I actually broke the plastic housing. I'm not sure if it was over-torqued or if it seized on. The only reason it broke was because the tool wasn't the whole way on, but it still took an insane amount of force to get off. I may give one of these a try if the next try goes as poorly.

 

I did the first oil change in my truck last weekend. Didn't like the plastic housing, hence my search. When the plastic one comes off at 5k... it won't be going back on.

 

Yeah I should have clarified when "properly installed" Jeffrey, oem should last.
But I also replaced the one in my T4R too, but I had to swap to tube on that one, the Taco was a straight install no big deal though.

Not on the one I bought enjoitheride, but your mileage may vary I cannot speak for the seller but its not a game changer to replace tube if you'd need to, I was prepared to do so and did have to on my 4R.

I am sorry for this newb question, but is the center tube on the new cap? So, if I had to change something, what is the part I am changing? I am not familiar with this style of filter. I have always had spin on. Sorry for the ridiculous question. Thanks for responding back!

 

No ridiculous at all to ask enjoitheride, the oil filter cap comes with the tube installed, and the longer one in the box for other applications, Taco takes the short one that it comes already installed on both for my Taco and my T4R.
Edit: I had to change the one on the 4R
