Ethanol Gasoline?

While getting gas today i noticed that the shell station that i always get gas from had a sign up saying 10% ethanol. I have always tried to avoid getting ethanol blended gas and always run 93 octane. My question is does anybody know if using ethanol will affect the performance of my 1grfe? I've heard alot of bad things about it and really don't know how much of it is true or just bs? Thanks

 

Ethanol blended fuel varies from state to state. Here in WA State all octane levels have a 10% Ethanol blend. Opponents of the Ethanol blended fuel say that it is corrosive and destroys the resin in fiberglass tanks on boats and damages vital engine components in marine applications.

As far as power is concerned I am not sure but I think there is less energy in Ethanol compared to equal parts gasoline.

 

All my fluid grades are mixed with 10% Ethanol, the only drawback I know is ethanol burns faster, cheaper but burns faster. Ethanol will damage the rubber seals on older vehicles, but is safe for use with most modern vehicles (year 2000+).

 

Owner's manual says no problem with 10% or less (in other words, we supposedly won't notice). I prefer not to have it, but as I understand the laws, I get no choice.

In MA you don't have a choice, gas has 10% eth. The only negative effect it will have is fuel mileage. Per volumn, alcohol has less BTU's then gas. Therefore, fuel milage will suffer.

 

I think it is still optional here in Ky. The hard part is finding a fuel station that doesnt have it? It must be cheaper to buy or something? A guy i work with says he cant find gas for his bass boat. I guess his boats owners manual says do not use ethanol.

 

Here in Ms. it's 10% mandatory. It doesn't burn as well as petroleum gas, puts out more emissions and gives you worse gas mileage. Thank god I don't have to burn 85%. Another thing it has made the price of corn go up.

 

Yeah i have noticed too that the quality of corn has not been good the last couple of seasons

 

Try a Sunoco station,I think their gas might not have ethanol it

I think it's law in Ms. to have up to 10%. Which really sounds dumb. Could have 0%.

 

I called the refinery that makes all the gas in the area and they said the only station thats not getting ethanol is like 30 minutes from my house in west virginia!

 

In Louisville, all gas has 10 percent ethanol. Just dont use the E85 ( 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline) on our trucks. Most vehicles that can use E85 have a yellow gas cap. Reports show that ethanol has less emissions than gasoline, but it will make fuel mileage suffer from 10 - 25%.

Energy density in terms of volume (i.e., how we purchase it):
Gasoline = 34.2 MJ/L
E10 = 33.7 MJ/L
100% Ethanol = 24MJ/L

The energy content of E10 is a negligible 1.5% less than that of gasoline. Interestingly, if one uses octane rating as a measure of performance, pure anhydrous ethanol (used to make E10) actually has a higher (R+M)/2 octane (116) than pump gasoline (85, 87, 91, etc.). So performance shouldn't be affected by 10% ethanol in E10.

Please also note that Tacoma's vital engine components are not normally used in marine environments, nor are Tacomas equipped with fiberglass tanks.

 

Most all gas has 10 percent in it these days

I wasnt sure if there was anything in the 1grfe engine that could be damaged by ethanol?

 

Perhaps you could ask the FAA. They don't permit the use of any ethanol at all in aviation gasoline.
