Hey guys I was hoping for some knowledge on the longest trailer being pulled. We are looking at a camper trailer that is 7700lbs(wet) and 31' long. We will be pulling it with our V8 4Runner, I think it's a little much for my taco. Our old trailer was 7500lbs and 27' long, it did just fine wet. With the new trailer we could pull it dry and bring water in the taco, it will be pulling our Gator. Also we will be using an equalizer hitch. The longest distance would be 100 miles, majority under. Thoughts? Thanks for any input.

I take the max rated towing capacity, and subtract 1,000 lbs from it to judge how much I'll tow.

I think that trailer is way too much for any Tacoma, unfortunately.

    What about a V8 4Runner?

That's about what my present trailer weighs and I use a Tundra. I don't think I would be comfortable using the 4runner.

7700lb is at the top end of the mid size frame vehicle. It will pull it but you will know its back there. I've pulled 10k 40 miles and knew it was back there every second.

Take the max rating and subtract a grand to be realistic.

And btw, I wish I had one of those.

Good rule. Dry weight is 5800lbs. So without water were right at the limit. How bad is the length going to effect things?

I don't think the length would be a problem, but what's the tongue weight?

Open the owners manual and take a hard look at the towing specs of the 4 Runner. I'd be surprised if the Tacoma isn't rated to tow more weight regardless of the engine. Pulling the trailer is only one part of the equation. You also have to look at payload capacity. Almost no vehicles, even 1/2 ton trucks come from the factory with a hitch rated for over 5000 lbs. A 7700 lb trailer will have about 1000 lbs of tongue weight and you must add about 100 lbs for a WDH and you're adding 1100 lbs to your vehicles suspension. My Tacoma is rated for 1200 lbs. payload, my F150, 1800. I'd bet the 4Runner is a less than 1200.

Even though it is rated for it, I wouldn't pull 7700 lbs with my, or most any 1/2 ton truck. I wouldn't go a pound over 5000 with a 4Runner.

    length don't matter when pulling

do not exceed weight or you could jackknife some day when the front is too light from too much tongue weight

if you need to haul heavy, get a bigger truck for it like I did

F350 4x4 XLT CCLB 7.3L turbo is my summer machine

Way too heavy. I had a 6500lb toy hauler that I was pulling with a Tundra. With the camper loaded and RZR in back it was more then the Tundra could handle comfortably. The truck could pull it, but it was not a comfortable towing experience. Get it in some wind and forget it...all over the road. Bought a Duramax 2500 HD and it was night and day difference. Don't forget the liability of pulling trailer over weight with your 4runner. Anything happens and your screwed with your insurance.

I've pulled my RZR on a light trailer with my new Tacoma and its a struggle to get over Parleys Summit and other big mountain passes. I know your 4runner has the V8 but I couldn't see you going over Parleys at more then a snails pace at best.

Honestly, even though the Tacoma is rated for something like 6,500 lbs, I don't like anymore than 3,500 pounds behind it.

We tow trailer loads of parts every week with the Taco. It really doesn't handle heavy loads well at all.

12,500 is max from what I have heard, I only pull about 10k on it when camping so far but when moving into new house it might have been more than that with all my garage stuff in it but that was only 10 miles. All my girls stuff fit into the trailer and was full and went 50 miles with it and towed real nice

Way too heavy as others have said. Tongue weight will likely be well over 1,000lbs loaded.

No one has mentioned wheelbase. The 4Runner has a wheelbase shorter than even a short bed double cab Tacoma. The wheel base of either model is still way to short. A long wheel base Tacoma would be ok but still under powered and suspended. In an evasive manuver, the trailer could very likely push the back end out from you.

This is a length measurement an rv dealer posted and it fits my experience well, however there are always exceptions...
"For the first 110" of wheelbase, this allows you 20' of trailer.
For each additional 4" of wheelbase, this gets you 1' more of trailer."

Do your passengers and fellow travelers on the road a favor and don't do it.

In my opinion, 26ft and 5,500lbs are the max limit of a Tacoma and I would not consider towing anything over 24 ft with the shorter wheelbase mid size SUV's like a 4Runner or XTerra.

Since 2009 I have towed a Sunline T2470 that is 25ft and 5,500lbs wet and it is all I would ever want.

This sounds like a job for a full size truck. You're going to hate every moment towing this much weight with a Taco or Runner.

    A V-8 4-runner? Never knew there was such a thing...thought they were either 4 or 6 cylinders...
