It didnt feel like it was a dog, just nothing when I pushed down the gas. I also drove the same MT truck yesterday at a different dealership and it was very responsive and drove great, but it was black unfortunately.

That's intersting..wonder why the difference between the trucks then? I wish I would have drove a few more to see. I will say, I had a hard time walking out of that dealership without the keys.

That dogish feeling while starting out is just the lack of low end torque, l really only feel it in first and second gear and have started taking first gear to 4000 RPMs and shifting to second quickly so as not to lose many RPMs to overcome it.

Maybe, but the black truck I drove didnt feel that way and it didnt have the start up issue either the one that lagged had, just very weird. It didnt feel under powered, just nothing/no response when throttle was pushed. It was a special order with the MT, and had 67 miles on it. The salesman said someone ordered it and then didnt buy it when it came in due to financial issues. Maybe they drove it and they couldnt get it to start 1st try either, and felt the no throttle response in 2nd gear.

The long start issue definitely points to something being wrong.

The starting problem may have been the clutch switch. I know I really have to make sure I push my clutch all the way down so it'll start. I've gotten in my truck a few times, push the clutch, turn the key and nothing. Push harder and voila, it cranks right up. Of course, I did put all weather floor mats in the day I got the truck, so that may be the reason I have to push it so hard. I never drove it with the OEM floor mats.

Yeah if it does absolutely nothing when you try to crank it its because you aren't pressing the clutch down far enough. It's happened to me a few times... this morning included ha. You can also stop it mid crank if you release the clutch pedal before it's fully cranked.

As for the literal no power at low RPM in 2nd I'm not sure. It definitely doesn't pop down in the 1k rpm territory but if it literally did nothing then i dunno that's questionable.

Nope, if the clutch isn't fully depressed it will do nothing.

Sounds like there is something wrong with that truck, my guess would be something with the fuel system

No it won't. If it was turning over and it failed to crank that's a problem. I'd pass on it personally.

Could also be just getting used to holding the key for a bit longer. I've been driving Chevys for 20 years before getting back into a Toyota. It took a minute to get used to having to hold the key forward until the motor started. Most vehicles these days have a starter that auto-disengages when the engine fires up. My 2016 is a step back in time in this regard. I've noticed that if I don't hold the key forward long enough to start the engine, it takes a little longer than normal to start the second time you try, presumably due to the engine stopping on a compression stroke.

He test drove 2 Manuals, 1 was hard to start the other 1was not. So l do not think it was anything to get adjusted to, plus it sounded like the hard start 1 also had driveability problems too.

I don't disagree. I'm just pointing out that the manual transmissions are OLD SCHOOL in that you have to hold the key engaged until the engine starts. I imagine that many of the younger guys on here have never experienced that as they've grown up in an auto start world.

Toyota doesn't make soft tacos, only crunchy. Been that way for years.

...but Redline MT90 seems to be a popular fluid for the manual trans that helps with harsh shifting for a lot of people. Not sure if it's the same formula for 3rd gens as it was for 1st and 2nd but I assume so, should check first before buying.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I talked to the dealership 5 minutes ago on the one that was acting weird, and they were trying to screw me on my Jeep Wrangler trade. I was going to pass anyway probably. Sucks because it was exactly what I want, a TRD OR MT in quicksand and you just cant find this truck anywhere. At the dealership yesterday where the black one was, I tried to talk to them about ordering one, and he didn't want to so I walked.

It took me a couple of months of fooling around with dealers on the internet until someone agreed to give me a fair price on a Quicksand OR with 6MT. Stay strong and get what you want. I sure love mine.

Are you able to shift it smoothly at that RPM? With the big gap between 1st and 2nd, if I rev too high, I have trouble making a smooth shift. If I short shift at low RPM once I get moving it is pretty seamless, but not very quick...

Yes, it shifts very smoothly even at higher RPMs.
