I just bought a 2006 trd. I changed fluids and cranked it up. I let it run idle for about 45 minutes. It shook really bad when I cranked it and knocked really loud. Initial thought was flywheel. After about 50 minutes(heard knocking the whole time) the truck made a clunk and a loud squeal then went dead and wouldn't crank back up. However it won't do anything in reverse either. When I connected the battery it had a small spark. What you think? Thanks

If you ran it for that long with the motor knocking I'd say its toast. Did you check the oil level on the dip stick?

Did you drain the tranny fluid accidentally?

Don't be offended by this question. It's actually a fairly common occurrence.

If I jump it off it will crank up again but then miss squeal and shut off. Maybe timing?

Though the check engine light and maintenance required light are both on.

Here are my thoughts. I'm a programmer not a mechanic, but I play one online.

Problem. You can't crank the truck on it's own, but you can run the starter when you are jumped.
Answer: The battery is too weak to start the truck on it's own.
Question: How did it get that way?

Problem. You can't stay running, now maybe you can't start at all. You had loud mechanical noises.
Answer. Perhaps you lost a bearing in the alternator, that's the squealing of the belt. Loud bangs could be the belt or something else breaking.
Question. Is this why the battery is dead?

Inspect your belt, see if it is still attached. Turn it over and look for signs of it slipping/ wearing out.
Try to look at the alternator. You might have to look at it from the driver side fender well (you can pop off the inner fender liner to get a really good look at it.
Check to see if anything looks out of sorts.
Crank the engine (on a jump) again and see if the alternator pulley turns.

If your belt has broken, your alternator may just be fine. Our front pulley bearings will wear out, and can seize. Especially if you are like me and jump into deep puddles.
I have a 2006 and have changed my pulley's twice now.

Flywheels rarely come apart, and if it was your ring gear breaking then you wouldn't be able to run your starter (now that would be a racket)
Automatic: Torque Converters rarely come apart, but if it has there is no way you would have been driving anywhere while listening to that noise.
Manual: I had my pressure plate detonate while crossing over a highway. Lots of noise and then no clutch, but that didn't do anything to my engine. In fact I bump started it in gear and crawled it home.

If the belt did come off you may have run with out a water pump. Did you happen to note that the temp was going up at all?

Anything else I can think of involves the front timing chains, the oil pump, or something bad going on deeper in the block.

Let's hope it's not any of these.

    :fingerscrossed:

I have burned up alternators by letting them idle for a long time like that. If you look at heavy duty alternators (police cars, etc) you'll notice most have little cooling fins designed to move air though them to keep the bearings cool, but many normal vehicles do not have that. They generate heat and need air flow.

I'm still trying to figure out why the OP would let the it idle for almost an hour while knocking. :der:

Take the serpentine belt off the engine and put a socket on the crankshaft pulley nut and with a long breaker bar try to rotate the engine. If it's a manual transmission make sure its in neutral with the parking brake on. Ignition key in the off position. Can you turn the motor over?

My feeling is that it's seized.

If the CEL is on....you have codes. Need to scan it and start from there.

The maintenance required light is nothing. Comes one every 5k miles. Just reset it.
