Rdj (eBay) flares review!

So guys I bought some rdj flares to see how they are and here it is

Tools needed for install:
10mm stubby socket and ratchet
1/2" socket and ratchet
Phillips screw driver -#2
T-40 Allen key (provided)
Exhaust hanger removal pliers- maybe...
Install time: about forever to put the gasket on the flares (at least like a month) and 45 minutes to put the flares on the truck.


Packaging: they seemed to be packed in a similar way to the bushwacker flares-basically a cardboard box with fender flares in plastic bags. There was nothing to protect the flares from rubbing against each other during shipment.

Finish: they arrived with minor scratches and a semi gloss appearance that seemed a bit blotchy. If you purchase these and are very particular about the finish, I would plan on painting them. All of the holes were clean and there was no shards of plastic that needed cleaned up. Overall, they looked pretty good.


Removal of the stock flares: remove all of the 10 mil bolts from the inner lip of the flares and rip the old flares off.(you may need to throw the stock flares away because they're probably broken because you just ripped them off).

Preparation of the new flares: 1.) Use the provided t-40 Allen bolts, washers and nylon nuts (all of these are stainless steel) and installed them around the perimeter of the flare where the top edge meets the truck.
* The provided washers are larger than the provided t-40 Allen bolts. If the fine details bother you, you will need to spend time centering the washers on the Allen bolts. A majority of the bolts ended up being about a 1/16th" off center with regards to the Allen bolt head.
2.) Install the gasket along the top edge of the flare where it meets the body of the truck. This was stressful enough to make the pope curse, so good luck to you. The gasket came in a balled up mess, I would recommend cutting the pieces to length prior to attempting the install (there is plenty of excess gasket to allow for a few extra inches on each flare). This gasket did use 3m adhesive tape on a positive note though.

Installation: the rear flares bolt on using either the stock flare 10mm bolts or the provided phillips screws. The rear passenger fit great, but I did have to drill out two of the holes on the rear driver (they were about 1/4" off). They both did fit nice and tight along the body though.

On the rear passenger flare I did have to remove two exhaust hangers to drop the exhaust down far enough to install the lowest screw. I have a trd exhaust so this may not be an issue for all exhausts.

The front flares installed using the factory 10mm bolts or the provided phillips screws excluding the front holes, near the front bumper. These two holes required you drilling a 3/16" hole in the fender lip and using supplied machine screw clips. The screws provided were to short for the screws to work, so I used self tapping screws supplied in the kit instead (I'm not sure what they were supposed to be used for) . Both front flares fit fairly well, but on the passenger side I used a washer to space between the fender lip and the flare to refine the gap between the bottom of the flare and the top of the bumper.

Overall, my thought is that these are well worth the money. They may not be 100% perfect, but for nearly half the price of the bushwacker flares i would definetly buy them again. They add about an additional inch of coverage as well, so with wider tires less debris will get thrown at the side of your truck.

 

Nice write-up. the link did not work for me for some reason... but a quick search of rdj fender flares was all I needed to do. do they provide anything other than a change of appearance? I am looking for something to cover my 285 tires a bit better... maybe an inch wider than stock flares.

 

Read the entire post. He says that they are 1 inch wider than stock.

 

He already gave you the answer............."They add about an additional inch of coverage as well, so with wider tires less debris will get thrown at the side of your truck."

 

tie goes to no one, lol................the flares look good but my tires aren't wide enough for them to look right. I don't really care for the wider flare look unless the wheel/tire combo fills them. Looks pointless to me with tires that are narrow enough for oem flares.

I really like the idea of these fender flares. I am going to measure to see if i actually need them when i get home. Other wise it is just a cosmetic thing and im too cheap for that.

Hey quick question or two...did the RJD flares cover over the scuff lines in the paint after pulling off the stock flares? And, did you paint these or do the pics show the bare finish of the flares. Thanks, truck looks great btw!

 

So do you have to actually drill into the outside of the fender? Or just the little lip on the inside? Sorry if that doesn't make sense. I tired lol

 

They use mainly the stock holes on the lip of the flare. Nothing needs to be drilled through the side of the fender, but one hole will need to be drilled on the lip of each front fender.

 

probably 3 years to late can anybody find a 4pc set for a 2012 Tacoma TRD short bed please
