Strange fluttering noise when accelerating from a dead stop

    Hello TW,

I bought my 17 Tacoma TRD OR 4x2 (AT) brand new about 2 months ago. I love it. Right around 1,500 miles, I've noticed a particular noise when I accelerate from a dead stop up to about 15 mph. It's sounds like a fluttering/whining/squealing noise. It almost sounds like tires spinning out but I'm not applying enough gas for that to be it.

It seems to only happen after I've driven the truck for around 10 minutes. When I first start it, it will never occur. Only seems to happen in 1st gear (AT). Only occurs when accelerating in about the 3-15 mph range. I don't believe it's the LCA howl because it doesn't occur at higher speeds or when cruising.

You can hear it at the beginning of this video I took. Anyone have any ideas what this could be?

Sounds like LCA's to me. It's a cheap/easy fix. Why not fix it to rule that out?

Good point. I just assumed it wasn't that because everyone that experiences it says it occurs between 35-55 mph.

I might be wrong, but that's what it sounds like to me. You can fix it in like 5 minutes for like $5. At least you will know if thats the problem or not.

OP can duct tape (or any tape, so it's almost free) the holes to see if it goes away. That's how Toyota does the TSB to test for it first, then go spend the money on some plugs at Lowe's.

My 17 has the Lower A Arms plugged from the Factory, hoping they all come that way now.

I actually did Post them up in 1 of these Threads before and then a few other guys with 17s were the same as mine. Glad they started doing it at the Factory, but maybe they don't do it on all models.

Can anyone confirm that the noise in my video sounds the same as the LCA sound?

I second that... Manufacturer date of 2/17 with two miles on it at time of purchase.

    TRD Off-Road

(Tape over yours to test it, fix with plugs from Lowes if needed)

It's hard to hear on the video but could that be the clutch fan?

Funny you should say that because that's exactly what I thought it sounded like. I wish!

Checked my LCAs over the weekend and they have the factory plugs. Still no idea what this noise is. I was really hoping someone else had experienced the same thing and could save me a trip to the dealer.

I think I may be experiencing the same sound thought it may be related to rear end howl. Was going to mention on my next service visit. Let us know what you find out.

Try loosening the two driveshaft carrier bearing bolts without jacking up the vehicle, jiggle the bracket around, and re-tighten them.

Took mine in today for this and they said carrier bearing is leaking and they are going to replace.

Thank you for the update. I'll have to take mine in to get checked.
