I love my third gen personally, my dealer experience has been less than stellar but that can happen with anything.

And yes id still buy an OR. I was between the 3G OR and a new wrangler unlimited rubicon in the same color.

The issue with the transmissions seems to have been 95% solved by the update. I still get shift flare from the 2-3 shift periodically but its rare.
My A/C blower motor friend and melted the controller at 4200 miles, again could happen to any platform.
I have the typical 3rd gen passenger dash rattle.

Other than that its been perfect and has done everything ive asked it to without so much as a whimper.

When I first bought my 2nd gen, I just went for the 4wd not knowing what the difference was in the Off Road. Actually bought the truck because it was the only one I found with leather seats. I joined TW and initially thought I made a mistake and should've gone for the OR because of the e-locker. A year later, I'm more knowledgeable about the truck and glad I got the SR5 so I can go for OBA and F/R lockers. Of course I thought I'd be done after a leveling kit but now the mod list just keeps getting longer.

I got to drive a 3rd gen loaner for a couple weeks while mine was getting some warranty work done. Interior was nice but didn't like the powerband of the engine. I was glad to get my 4.0 back. This was preTSB so maybe it's different after the transmission update.

I don't know about that. I would not get the tech package if I had to do it again. Get rid of the sunroof. Other than that it's awesome. TSB makes the trans feel good to me. But I don't drive too fast either.

It also has a transmission learn procedure in the first 1500 miles. So if some grandpa drove it and never really saw past 25% throttle then itll learn to be a slug. If you drive in i35 traffic everyday having to romp on it up onramps, it wont complain.

Bought a base because you and I have the 8.4 rear instead of 8.0 and I wanted a air locker

Do you use the ECT button? I'll be honest, I can be a pretty aggressive driver and sometimes a stoplight to stoplight racer. Driving around in North Irving can be frustrating with lots of inexperienced drivers (new to the States). Keeping the ECT engaged made it a little better for me, but still wasn't as quick off the line as my 2nd gen. Quick of course is a relative term with the Tacoma.
It was a 2016 SR5 4x4 with 8000 miles on it. It was Jan/Feb 2016 when I got the loaner from Toyota of Denton which I think was before the TSB. I just felt like I had to floor it to get on the highway. I didn't really "feel" the power until the higher RPM's. As soon as I did, it wanted to shift. That ECT seemed to make it hang in a gear just a little longer.

No the only exclusive color is the Cement on the Pro.

Yeah the TSB fixed all of that for me. It feels responsive now and IMO acts like it should. I don't use the ETC button. Tried it a couple of times and I can feel something but overall I'm just cruising from one place to the next. I have got on the throttle a few times and found that it did what I wanted to. After the TSB the trans seems to hold gears like it should instead of shifting too early.

Yep, and it seems like you were open/open for a while and still did your fair share of wheeling. With the limited off road experience I have, it's helped me to learn to take better lines and find the limits of the truck. A lot of times I keep mine in 2WD and only put it in 4HI or LO when I absolutely have to. Truck impresses me every time I take it out. After front suspension upgrade, I'll start saving for the OBA/locker setup.

There are some configurations that are exclusive though. Like if you want some color it forces you to have the tech package. I don't recall what they were but if you go through the configurator online you'll get an idea of what is allowed to have what. I recall that a manual only comes in blue if you get the OR, but I could be off on that exact configuration.
Oh and you cant get the tech package w/o getting a sunroof (boo). Thats originally what I wanted, but not allowed.

I would skip the tech package to do away with the BSM that way you don't have to worry about a plate bumper that supports BSM. I like the feature but I would hate to have a new bumper and a useless feature on the truck. I'm sure more fab shops will start supporting but for now there is only one and I'm not a fan of it.

I was open open awhile. Never had a locker in any of my rigs. It teaches you lines, can be a lot of fun. All the golden triangle guys I wheel with I did everything and more and they have e lockers. Only 1 time did I get stuck. I roll around in 2wd a lot and use 4 lo for steep hills going up or down to keep tranny temp lower and so I'm not on the brakes

Personally, I find BSM annoying as hell. Havent driven a Toyota with it but the Ford's dont ever shut up.

Well that's using the "Build" thing on their website. Which is only searching in inventory and pre-allocated configurations in our area. SR5, TRD and Limited should be able to get any color regardless, if you want to 'order.'
