Put 255/85/16s on stock OR wheels and suspension

Have gotten endless compliments from coworkers since these went on. They've got the cool factor AND the 'Mud? Psh' factor. Can't go wrong!

 

Cool. Thanks for the write up. I just wish they came in this size on the KO2, GGAT2, or X3.

 

I'd like to see the Duratrac in this size for the snow performance.

 

I read a decent Article that really broke down the science of the pros/cons between wider tires and suck. Some good information for the future. I've haven't looked into pricing, and my truck suspension wont be stock when the time comes, but the idea behind skinnier tires seems logical.

My biggest concern is that I get a fair amount of fender rubbing at full tuck with my 275s now and don't think a wider tire will help. I'm about to go mid travel, but I'm not sure that will solve the issue. I'll have the same amount of lift as my Bilsteins.

I do wish I could find a little wider of a tire than the 255s though. They appear to read out as a 33x10. My TRD came factory with 265s or 10.5". Any recommendations or ideas on a 33x10.5 or maybe even a 275?

 

Unfortunately, I was pretty much exclusively looking at the 255s throughout this venture because I didn't want to have to do much work cutting this and trimming that, etc. to get the tires to fit. They were appealing to me as basically a 'plug and play' option for 33s. I'm confident that 255s can handle most offroad conditions just fine (lots of military trucks have run skinny tires throughout history). The wider tires seemed more like 'cool factor' in my eyes, and the hassle wasnt worth it to me in the end.

 

Thanks for posting! This post and @Sandytaco14 have convinced me that my next tires will be 255/85/16

 

@Crom is running this tire size, but I'm thinking he may be going to 285s next time. His is a second gen, but I thought he might add a little to the conversation if he can. Might check out his build thread.

 

Hey it was @Jibbs That took the time to make a thread, I'm just the idiot that tried it first.

 

I pulled the trigger, just ordered a set of dick cepeks. 4 tires for $715 on 4wd.com. 255/85/16! I ended up only paying $667 total because of my credit card cash rewards and the ebates.com extension, super stoked. Will post pictures in a week or two when I get them on.

Ive been running 255/85/16's for 2 years now. mud terrains. With a 3 inch lift (886's and ome shocks, dakar rears)

I did have to trim. They do rub so i removed the front wheel well plastics. Most notably when you flex and turn at the same time. An example is leaving a parking lot, turning right, and gunning it. It rubs the frame every time but its so minor it doesnt bother me.

I gained almost an inch because they are so skinny and tall. Since the tires are skinny, you get pushed around on the freeway by the wind more easily. Also, you do notice a loss in power. Mostly when your going ~50mph and gun it to pass...its a lot slower speeding up.

I love having them for off roading. The extra clearance and tiny footprint makes off roading a breeze. Personally, when they wear out, Im going to get BFG A/Ts this time. The muds are very loud and knobby. I knew that going in, so its not a complaint.

I almost went the 255 route on my '15. But I stuck with 265/75/16. I just hate the idea of rubbing (even with a 3" lift) so anything bigger was out out of the question for me at the time. I think the 2nd gens still had very minor trimming involved, if I remember correctly. I regret it. So many positive experiences with them, I wish I went with the 255's.

With my '16, I originally wanted 275's and the sema TRD pro wheels. Now, I'm 99% sure that I'll be keeping my stock OR's and going the 255/85/16 route. Getting a tall 33" without any rubbing? No brainer in my opinion. Plus, it's a cheaper route by keeping the same wheels. My only complaint is the lack of tire choices. But there are some good tires in this size. Just not the ones I originally wanted. I hope to join the 255/85/16 club soon!

 

If I have aftermarket wheels with a 0 offset, will skinnies still still just outside the wheel well like my 265s do? I like that look.

 

They'll be near it. I had -12 with 285s and everything not contact patch (the entire sidewall, foot example) was outside. At 0 and 255, you will move approximately 1" in from where I was, so I'd think you'd be completely inside.

 

They don't come in AT, they come in MT though.

 

I am now confused . I thought the 255 85 16 tires with stock suspension and wheels needed no trimming . You have a 3 in, lift and had to trim ?
