Don't feel bad, mine shifts buttery smooth on every gear except Reverse, it fights me almost every time.

    Mine is the same way.

Redline MT-90 definitely smoothed out shifting on my 2nd gen. I was very surprise at how much it helped.

I guess maybe I'm not asking the question right. The shifting itself isn't the problem, it's notchy but it's a truck... It's when I shift at a high RPM with a lot of throttle the vehicle itself tends to buck around.

edit- It's only really noticeable between 1st and 2nd because of the big gap in ratios.

I know where you're coming from. My shifts from 1st to 2nd aren't exactly smooth for my passengers; they'll feel it. This truck is by far a jack rabbit off the line, so I typically just shift out of first around 2800-3200 knowing that the car ahead of me is only getting further away. It gives me pretty low revs once in 2nd, but a smoother transition, especially if the wife is putting on makeup or something.

Exactly! And that's the only time it's usually a problem, when my wife is in the car and not paying attention....:angrygirl:

It sucks for acceleration once in 2nd. But I'm not banking on winning any 1/4 mile'rs in this truck.

It is now. been waiting 2 months to get an allocation on this same truck without the Premium/Tech, so it will be a while before I can do any mods. Going to pick it up on Thursday...the wait is almost over. Thanks for pointing this one out Diablo169.

BTW is there a way I can steal you pic?

TRD Exhaust, Mobtown bolt on sliders and aluminum tailgate reinforcement, Reverse lights changed to yellow turn signals, LED pods added for reverse, ADD W1 oil catch can, Total Chaos bed reinforcement, rear diff breather to taillight mod, 12" combo led bars behind lower grill wired to high beams, Toyota led bed light kit, 400 watt anytime mod, SSO slimeline front bumper.
This was a problem for me when i went from my 1st to 2nd gen also. I figured out that at least for me on the gen 2 the drive by wire/throttle hang is the cause of the awkward shift from 1 to 2. Either you have to go slow into secound or fast for smooth there no middle ground for smooth.

I've found turning off the VSC/TRAC gives me more of the old style non-computer lag shifting. It's a different shifting style for me when I leave it all on, still getting used to it but its breaking in nicely! Happy I went in for a test drive and came out with the Coma with only 5 miles after hearing guys searching far and wide for them now!

After playing around with it a bit, it seems that it is not so much an RPM thing as a heavy throttle thing. Meaning, I can shift at most RPM smoothly, but if I have my foot in it it tends to be more lurchy....

Could be your timing leading to some rev hang. The truck seems really sensitive to it and honestly most modern manuals are. I know my friend with a Subaru says 1 to 2 in that took some practice too. I personally can't shift into 2nd at low RPM, I can get it smooth but for some reason I get a "womp womp womp", sine wave type of power delivery that rocks the truck back and forth if I end up in 2nd anywhere below 2k RPM and hit the gas. Therefore I shift out of 1st at ~3k-3.5k. Just takes a bit longer for the RPMs to fall.

Did you get it, I went there the other day, and it wasn't parked out front anymore.

Any 3rd gen 6 speed manual folks regear from 4.3 to 4.88? I am doing a front locker and debating since the front diff is so labor intensive. But since our gearing is so odd with the manual transmission I'm not sure if it'll be too low.

A friend of mine is now driving my 2001 Taco - 225,000 miles - Original Clutch !! It's all about knowing how to drive a manual in the first place.

This is why the Taco DOES NOT have a 'stomp-on' parking break. It's a lever next to your right arm (where is should be). (The new Taco's have a hill holder, however it does not hold forever) This means you can use your left foot on the clutch and right foot on gas-pedal ....Hills are no problem. In my 2001 Taco I defeated the interlock on the transfer case shifter so I could use low-range in 2WD. Worked great going up the steep hills of downtown Seattle. In fact I could leave it in low-range while driving down town. The beauty of the dual-stick arrangement in that model is that you could treat it like a non-syncro transmission and shift from low to high while in motion. I'd often 'double shift' from 5th Low to 2nd high and keep going. The electric control transfer case in my 2016 was a step backward. I'd pay extra for a return of the old implementation. - Clay

There is no hill holder on my 2017, unless for some reason I wanted to use the handbrake as one manually.

Mine has it...normally I would use the hand brake but this is quite functional.
