If you ever witness one snapping, you will buy the heaviest rated one money can buy. They can be deadly. The "snatch strap" style will stretch and "rubber band" to help pull out a stuck vehicle. There really is a difference.

 

I know I definitely want "snatch/recovery" type, NOT "towing". Tow doesn't stretch.
Guess I should go cheap on recovery straps. Shackles are one thing...straps are not.

 

Only things from harbor freight I trust are the 6 ton jack stands, my impact sockets, and compressor.

Exactly. But for those buying it, make sure you get the one rated for your vehicle. If you get one that's too heavy, you lose the "stretch" aspect of it and it just becomes a tow strap.

Back when I first got involved in off roading, I saw a 3/4-ton Ford truck try to yank a stuck IH Scout out of a muddy creek one night. They were using a "lift strap" that had a duty rating of something like 20,000 lbs. But a 7500lb truck @ 20 or 25 mph jerking on an "anchor" exerts FAR more load. Strap snapped, went through the windshield of the scout and damn near killed the driver. The image is forever ingrained in my brain. Also saw a winch cable snap (while in Army) and shear off a 6" maple tree like it was going through hot butter.

Proportionally, I spend more on recovery gear than I do truck parts. I buy the heaviest, best, most durable stuff I can get my hands on. Hauling a friend to the ER (or worse) is no fun. It happens.

 

Reverse lights? Or work lights?

 

My Vault shackles worked well for recovering myself the 3 times I was stuck at LBL. No signs of wear or use even, yet.
