Can my roof rack carry a kayak?

Considering buying a kayak in the future and was wondering if the roof rack that came with my ARE shell could transport a kayak. Brand is nomadic, not sure what model. And if not, how much trouble would it be to remove and add something like a yakima rack?

 

How are the rails mounted, i'm sure the racks could hold the weight, but the up draft from your kayak catching the wind might pull the rails off if they are not bolts with backing plates. I have a Thule rack on my shell and it held my RTT no problem.

Just put your tailgate down and secure the kayak in the bed. That's how my son transports his.

 

I'd rather not let a fully capable rack go to waste...

So long as it doesn't exceed the racks weight limit and you can strap it down securely then I don't see why not...

Looks capable to me, would just like some more insight. Even if it turns out that the rack is not able to fit my needs, I'd still purchase another rack that can rather than let the kayak hang out of the bed.

 

Look inside the shell, do you see screws, bolts, Etc.. sticking through the inside? It looks like it will hold the weight of a kayak, what are they 50-70ibs, but when it catches wind and pulls up could be a problem. Or run a line from the front bumper to the bow, and a line from the rear bumper to the stern to hold it down.

 

I would guess that would hold a kayak no problem but not sure where you would tie it down.

Any chance you know if the yakima saddles/rollers would fit on my rack or are they specifically made for yakima racks?

maybe add a roof rack for the truck as well for extra security and as well as another posted tie down to the front and rear bumper if possible
id say yeah yes the racks will take the weight of the kayak the only issue is the up wind

 

Not your question, but here's how I carry mine. Nothing like being out on the water in a kayak!

 

The Yakima Deckhand and Handroll will fit pretty much any rack, including aero style like yours. If you wanna get fancy, the Showdown should also fit.

You should be good to go. Just be sure to tie down the bow and stern while in transit.

I've had a Thule rack in the past. It would totally work with the bars on your cap.

I got a canoe last year and gave them to my brother.

Yes you can haul a kayak on that setup. They look like Yakima Tracks so you could take those shitty towers/bars off and install yakima or thule towers/bars no problem.
