Pcv catch can

anyone install one of these on there truck yet? I do it to all of my vehicles and was looking for some ideas

Yes. To each their own. If you like a lot of oil in your intake, don't install a catch can.

 

Thanks ironpeak that's what I was looking for. Anyone seen a 3rd gen with one installed?

Smitty99, it keeps your intake manifold and valves clean. Maybe it's unnecessary but so are most things I spend my money on lol

 

Amazing that a truck designed in 2017 would be susceptible to getting oil in the manifold and valves...@z50king you better get on it

 

I am a bit buzzed, but is this really a necessary mod?

 

I only found it necessary on my boosted cars

 

When direct injection started to become the standard, some manufacturers (especially Audi) had issues with carbon buildup inside the intake runners and on the back of the valves. This caused a lot of problems and often required that the intake manifolds were removed so a tech could chip that stuff off and vacuum it out.

Installing a catch can supposedly helped in these situations.

What most people don't realize is that most engines already have a baffled can/box/container that's integrated into the PCV system, usually on block.


Tl;dr, dont use poor quality gasoline and you're probably fine.

 

Every vehicle with a pcv (positive crankcase breather valve) routes hot gas buildup back into the intake to be burned. Carbon buildup on valves isnt a new thing, been an issue since they started burning carbon based fuel. Bigger issue on direct injected cars because they do not have gasoline with its cleaning agents putting gas past the back of the valves. This is a major reason i think our trucks come with both direct and port injectors (and mpg).

An oil catch can seperated the oil out of the pcv mixture so only hot air is returned to the intake of an engine. Some motors are more susceptible to carbon buildup than others. Every engine should have one but it is one more maintenence item people would have to pay attention to and most people dont like maintence items

 

This^ On my Chevy truck I had a catch can as it didn't have the dual system of port and direct injection, I dumped out a can full of sludge at least once by-weekly. I'm less worried about it with Toyota's system though, if they didn't have any port injectors I'd buy one no doubt as 30k miles on any DI only engine will cause it to be coaked up and need walnut blasting to run at 100%.

 

I don’t see any viable reason for this mod on a stock DD vehicle, except to tinker some time away, spend money and possibly ruin you engine if a hose should burst and void your engine warranty, or maybe even catch it on fire.

Toyota direct fuel injection uses self cleaning injector cycle to clean valves and that’s one of the noise some ppl find so annoying under the hood.

But if you’re concerned about your intake manifold carbon and sludge build up, use top tier fuel, replace oil every 5k, and replace you pcv valve every 3yr or 36k miles.
You may find some of those recommended in the owners manual as part of regular maintenance, but you won’t find a PCV catch can system recommended anywhere on it last time I checked.
That is totally up to you, and to each their own.

I had actually done a little research on this and it does seem that modern vehicles can benefit from the catch can. In the never ending quest to meet EPA MPG standards they started using Low Tension Piston Rings along with thinner Oils thus creating this issue.

 

Somehow I don't think this catch can is necessary, at least not on a Toyota. personally I know of two trucks and 1 4Runner with over 250,000 and another truck just under 200,000. They seemed to do fine without it. Unless you simply don't maintain the vehicle, a Toyota just keep running and running and running. Longer than the frickin energizer bunny.

 

I’ve put hundreds of thousands of miles on mainly Toyota family vehicles and on domestic model fleet vehicles and with only regular maintenance, no major internal engine failures have occurred.
The only concerns have mainly been sensors on domestic fleet vehicles and there were some plastic intake manifolds on the 5.0L fords that cracked, and there was sludge build up on those too, but it was due to a faulty EGR system which was corrected by the factory but may not have been covered if they’ve would have a had catch can.

Your older trucks would have still had higher tension piston rings and heavier oil, that said if you go under the 2nd Gen Section and look up the catch can you will see it even collects quite a bit.

 

Never heard of any issues on the 5.0 Intakes, l am aware of cracking plastic Intakes on the old 4.6 for about a 5 year period in the late 90s to early 2000s.
