ShiftSense Pro - transmission shift controller for Gen3 Tacoma

My buddy and I are working on a device to automatically engage the ECT control when going uphill and turn it off when your level again. You get the best of both worlds, better MPG on flat land and higher RPM before shifting when you need it going up hill. We hope the price would be less than $100.

I assume that he posted that emoji because there are many many posts detailing the exact same question you asked.

Just an assumption.

 

I would like a device that engages the ECT when I depress the gas pedal and disengages when I let off.

But I am just trolling now.

 

It works by measure the tilt, hence going up hill.

 

This is my fifth vehicle with a six-speed transmission. Normally when I depress the accelerator pedal, in other 6ATs, the vehicle would be in a proper gear for the road speed and the torque of the engine would accelerate the vehicle. Of course, at times you could be right at a downshift point and/or you have significantly depressed the accelator and a downshift would be necessary. My complaint with this "modern" six-speed transmission is that it nearly always needs a downshift. And, the majority of the complaints here are that it needs TWO downshifts. Two downshifts means Toyota was trying to fool someone.

We were fully geared up to produce several hundred of these in the first year, but ended up exceeding that goal in just the first 2 weeks! I am extremely thankful to those who have purchased so far, and appreciate all of the great feedback!!

That said, we have had to increase our in-house capacity. We are continuing to fulfill existing orders, while at the same time working out agreements and lead-times with suppliers. Unfortunately this takes a bit of time to pull together and we needed to free up a bit of time to make that happen; Hence the delay in ordering. In order to be fair to everyone, and to be in a position to state firm lead-times, we need to first solidify the lead-times of our suppliers and our own production schedule. We are in the final stages of that now.

I fully expect to re-open orders within a few days, and will let you know. We also plan to extend the current pricing by the same amount of time.

We hope that you are willing to wait the few extra days and we appreciate your patience.

Haven't read much on here only because I'm not interested, but me thinks this would work even better if someone offered this along with better throttle mapping, not necessarily a tune just a throttle map, stock mapping sucks, it's like pressing on bag of molasses on a cold day, you never know what you gonna get

 

Just hooked mine up and went for a quick drive. While it's not much of a report, I do like that it does not up shift as quick, but that's going to be a good bit to get used to. It leaves it in the power band much longer than the stock D did, so it seems like you're winding it out a lot more, but then again, I was on the gas a bit more than normal trying to see how it would shift and it's supposed to not shift as much, so really not surprising.

One thing I really like was that since it did not up shift as early, when I would hit a small hill, it would not down shift 2-3 times (ok, maybe just once) to get enough power to make it up the hill. I did love that... I hated those stupid rolling hills where my truck would have to drop gears just to make it up the hills. I have a ton of those around my area and the stock D could never figure them out.

I am looking forward to seeing how it acts on the interstate on my way to work Monday, but so far, I really like it. I do think part of what I was seeing was the note that someone made about the shift points before the engine gets up to temperature, so I'm wanting more time to get a better idea of how it goes. Not that it was bad, but in my short trip, I barely had time to get my truck warmed up.

Install was a breeze. I ended up using a splitter that Amazon had (still using a Verizon Hum) and a couple Christmas light clips up under the dash and you can't see anything. Install could easily take just 10 minutes if you wanted to leave it out in the open as it was designed, but I put the main box just under the front seat, so it's hidden away for whenever I take mine back in for the rear diff issue. I used a couple wire tie adhesive tabs to hold the "split" ends up under the dash near the center column with the wires running along under the edge of my WeatherTech floor-mats and it's very tidy. I just wanted to keep it out of view so the dealership does not ask any questions and you can't see anything different when you sit in the truck. That's just me...

In my short trip, I didn't see my mileage drop at all, but I need some time driving it to see how that is affected. My little cruise really wouldn't have shown anything, so I'll have to report back after a few tanks of gas and trips to and from work.

Overall, great product and it's nice to see folks taking an issue and finding a nifty solution. Yeah, I wish Toyota would have done this, but I do see why they programmed it to shift like it does to drive up MPGs at the expense of power and transmissions shifting a lot. It is what it is, but this seems to have eliminated most of the issues I had. Need to see how interstate driving is, but so far, so good.

 

Yes, I definitely noticed that the shifts as I came to a stop light were MUCH smoother. I was very happy w/ that fix.

Received mine today. drove around 80 miles. I hid mine under the tray in-front of the cup holders so its not on the side by the seat pretty much fully hidden besides the obd wire coming out above the gas pedal. Overall the truck shifts awesome like I would expect it too (normally). But what really made me irritated with it and I haven't decided to pull it out is it gets stuck in 4th gear even when I am going 60 with 285s which = idk 64 around there.. It was killing my highway mpg. I do a lot of highway so maybe this isn't for me. I understand how the shifts work but it bases off your speedometer. Anyone have a fix for this? Its probably even worse for people with bigger tires. Then again tho I love the thing. Put a smile on my face.

 

Have you recalibrated your speedo? Wonder if it would have an affect one way or the other...

 

How do you do that?
