You either don't have many people in your truck or they are just too polite to tell you that your new truck is jacked up. If it's as loud as mine, there's no way they don't hear it.

Yep. It's gotten louder and happens at a wider speed range. I also have the added privilege of having a manual transmission whose heat shield makes a very similar noise while accelerating so I get double whacked.

There is a TSB for the heat shield but they are backordered unfortunately.

I've got a long bed. I wonder if the extra foot or so back makes it harder to hear.

54 is pretty much the sweet spot in my truck too although I do also hear it in a bigger range.

Mine is definitely louder and covers a wider range now.

Toyota sucks for letting this linger.

I've been saying for a while my mine is getting louder. I track it with my sat radio volume. I think it has stopped getting louder now but from 1200 miles up to 2800 it got louder.

Mine is still howling. I have 24k on the truck and 15k on the rear differential.

I'm going in for my 10k/12mo service next week. Do I even bother to bring this issue up again? I had the whining diff looked at by Tech Service at my 5k service. He acknowledged the issue, said Toyota knows about the issue but doesn't have a fix yet and to check by when I came in for 10k. Based on what I've read here there doesn't seem to be a solution yet. I bet if I make enough noise they may replace the diff, but others are saying that won't solve anything.

    YES, PLEASE!!

Bring it up and call corporate and open a ticket with them. They need more people to complain so they fix it.

I opened a ticket last time because my dealer said it was "normal". That's how I got the meeting with tech service.

Is the only reason to open another ticket just to help elevate this issue? Do you think they will actually do anything? What should I expect for a solution?

No, they won't do anything until there is an official fix for it. Until then, if you bring cause enough raucous, they will probably just swap out diffs and the noise will be back. Since you already have it documented, I would just ask the service advisor if he heard of a fix yet a different he says no just leave it at that.

It definitely has to something to do with the driveshaft/carrier bearing, some sort of resonance probably.

I installed the Wheeler's 3-leaf progressive add-a-leaf for a 1.5" lift, and dropped the carrier bearing 0.5". My pinion angle is still not where it needs to be (need some axle shims), but the middle u-joint is near 0 degrees, the pinion u-joint is much closer in angle to the transfer case u-joint, and the howling sound between 60-65 mph is all but gone. It's much, much quieter than it was before.

Thats good that your truck sounds less but maybe you have tire noise cancelling it out? If it is driveline then why do some do it and others do not, why does it not do it from day 1, why does it get louder over time, why does the range of speed increase, and would putting a load in the bed change the angle of the driveshaft thus eliminating the howl? I personally still think it is inside the diff,

Wait, so someone could add washers to their truck and test this?? Did I read that right?

If it were that simple l believe Toyota would have done that by now rather than swapping out countless rear ends.
