Pcv catch can

Kind of funny, we used to talk engine sizes in cubic inches such as 351, 460, 427, 289, 397, 454, 302. Now it's all about liters. Guess I'm showing my age a little bit.

 

We had a few CV's that had them, on fleet stuff, you get to see things other ppl never have to deal with

 

Liter is the new CU.
But oh how I loved the 351 CU Cleveland though. Couldn't resist when i saw it on your list, but I supposed that anything that changes the outside dimension size like a new manifold gets a free pass to be converted to liters I guess so I don't keep track of it any more lolo!

 

Crown Vics never came with modern 5.0.

 

That's being more than just a little alarmist.
If a hose bursts (from such low pressure??) you're simply venting PCV to atmosphere. Your engine will not be ruined by that. Older cars vented to atmosphere their entire service lives.
If you have enough blowby to start a fire, you had bigger problems to begin with. Mainly the fact that you probably don't have piston rings anymore.

Onto the question of "necessity" ... take apart a well maintained port injection engine (of any manufacturer) with ~100,000 miles on the clock and you will find that the inside of the intake manifold is coated with a foul carbon/oil buildup from the PCV.

Here, I've got a picture, this is an intake runner from a Mazda Miata with ~120K when its manifold was pulled for salvage:


It's not something you want in there, but at the same time the accumulation of many years & miles is not really appreciable enough to block a lot of flow or break anything.
The worst this would do is block little vacuum passages and cause headaches with check engine lights over emissions passages and sensors.

The "only turbo cars need it" sentiment is a misunderstanding of the fact that it's extremely important to keep this PCV condensation from happening inside an intercooler.
Intercoolers cool the intake air, and this causes the PCV oil to condense out of the air. Oil in the intercooler makes the intercooler not work as well. Thus, you lose power because your intercooler is no longer working at an acceptable efficiency.

So, basically TL;DR do you want that shit in your motor? Of course not. Is a catch can a good way of keeping it out? Yup.
But at the same time, it's not like you desperately need to add one. If you have the know-how, an afternoon of free time, and ~$100, it's not going to hurt anything.

 

LOL And when you brought up the 351, everyone had their opinion on the Cleveland or Windsor. I was heartbroken when the TransAm listed liters on the hood.

 

The problem that we had was long ago shakerhood, and the 4.6-4.9L were marketed as 5.0 at one time and we had a mixture including f-150’s at the time.

But the bottom line is, its still a POS as far as I’m concerned but even so, if you fix it and repair it daily, it should last a very long time.

I don’t think I’m being an alarmist Nitori, I’m just playing out all possibilities into best/worst case scenarios, and I don’t see an upside to this mod.

IDK what materials are used or anything really that proves its necessary, and a Mazda and a turbo engine is nothing like we have in our 3.5L trucks to indicate I need this, or that it will significantly improve it.
But it is extra weight and obstruction in the engine bay should it need work, and I don't think warranty will cover the extra labor to get around or remove it.

Moreover, I’d bet that even with the “can catch” you’d still have carbon build in there so that's a mute point for me. Only way I know to remove it completely is grind and elbow grease.

But that’s just me, to each their own I’m not going to just install or recommend something that may or may not cause serious consequences and without factory recommendation as to its benefits.

Yes, it was an ongoing debate at the time FrankJake, I chose sides lolo! And the '76 TransAm was a favorite of mine, still is as it was kool as chit as I remember it from the movie "the bandit".

 

This PCV catch can is a great idea! Someone should alert Toyota!!!

 

The 4.6 Modular Motor was never marketed as a 5.0, the Coyote 5.0 came out in 2011. There was a recall on the 4.6 Mod Motor plastic intakes that you described.

I personally believe the 2nd gen benefits more then the 3rd gen with the oil catch can due to the 2nd gen lack of the dual fuel injection setup.

It's up to you if you want to keep your engine internals as clean as possible. One of the reasons Toyota or other car manufacturers don't install these is because they know most people have a hard time checking the engine oil level let alone popping the hood up or know where the hood prop is.

BTW I have one and after 5k miles it catches about half the bottle when I dump it. Worth it IMO.

 

I did a catch can on my sons 2000 and on my 2007. When I did the heads on my sons 2000 with 200k on it the intake took three days of dipping and scrubbing to get all the oil build up out on the inside of the intake manifold. Every oil change I drain about 3 to 4 teaspoon from the catch can. If you like oil in your intake then leave the catch can out.

 

I thought it helps with speeding up air flow with the extra vaporized lubrication...
