I'm a fan of E rated DuraTracs because of gone thru 2 sets of them on my Jeep. I thought they did good in the snow and ok on ice. I have had the sidewall punctured but that was on the road and once by a piece or rebar and the other by a pair of scissors. Well actually just one side of a pair of scissors. In the rain they did pretty good and I never really had any issues with them. Offroad I aired down to 15 psi and there is probably 2 times I can remember losing traction with them. Overall I really liked them and would buy them again. Now I have friends that I wheeled with that have the opposite opinion of them. I had a friend blow out 2 side walls in one day. He had to borrow my spare to get home. As of now I'm waiting the stock tires wear down before buying new ones and I'm not sure if I'm going to get them again or not. It really comes down to size for me. I'm thinking about going with a 255/85/16 and they don't make it in that size but they do make the ST MAXX in that size. That may be my next tire from reading all the good reviews on it but mainly because the DuraTracs don't come in that size.

@ebbs15, the folks you know in Denver running Cooper ST/Maxx, are they in E load or something else?

 Thanks for highlighting these. The LT265/75-16 comes in a Load Range C and is M&S rated... me likely!

I went back and forth between C and E, as I wanted a smoother ride for this truck but still have confidence to take it over rough terrain and haul a load if the need arose. The guys at Les Schwab recommended the E rated and said they could trade them for C rated after a few days if I wasn't happy. I plan to keep them as they ride well, 35 psi all around. That may change as they wear down and age though. Just my .02 on that. :) But it was a tough decision as I was leaning towards the C rated from the start.

The Tacoma is going to need tires shortly, and I'm sticking with C. I'm running old GY MTRs in D, and they're too firm/stiff for my tastes. I was leaning towards the Toyo Open Country AT II. But, that M&S rating for the Les Schwab has me curious.

I ran the Toyo Open Country and the MT both and did not like them. :notsure:
Both rode harsh and were heavy feeling.

And since the Taco is not my wheeling rig, but just an exploring/mild trails rig, I don't need anything excessively aggressive, heavy, and harsh-riding.

    Thanks for the insights!

I know I gave my opinion on the Dura trac's already and my experience even though very real seems to be an anomaly. Therefore when I need to replace the dura tracs in another 5k, I was thinking of giving the Cooper ST Maxx's a chance since you all seem to love them. I'd love to hear from those of you who have same tire size 285/70R17 in ST Maxx's.

    I already checked https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/show-off-your-cooper-st-maxx.346956/
but 198 pages I only see few with same tire size and very old posts so figured check here 1st before replying to that thread.

Those of you with 285/70R17 My wheel is helo 17x8.5 (I think)

    1) What load range D or E / ply? (my dura tracs are D's and 8 ply)

    2) What kind of tread life are you getting?

    3) Do you have any rubbing?
-If so did you have to do any cutting... details (pix)
--I don't have any rubbing with the Dura tracs (no spacers) and only cutting I did was to the front (part of the front wheel wells by just cutting the plastic and pushing it back) pic to follow in coming days.

    4) What kind of lift to accommodate these tires
-I ask because I was told my Ultimate Toytec 3-4" lift that I put on back in 2010 is supposedly leaking according to the Mtn States stealership but my ride quality is fine and currently no signs of uneven tire wear to indicate the front coilers shocks are bad. So if they are and need to be replaced down road I plan to do them same time as tire if applicable so don't ruin new tires and curious what your set up is. I am thinking grease that spilled out is from the boots that I had them just replace last week as they were ripped for while

    5) I do a fair amount of towing (3500-5500#s) and wondering performance wise what your experience is with them?
-I haven't gotten into the specs for load bearing similarities yet.

    6) Do you balance them every 5k when you do rotation? How about alignment each time or once a year? I have heard conflicting info from many tire shops and taco people with larger size tires but not those with dura tracs or Maxx's. With my dura tracs I haven't had to do an alignment since I put them on back 2010 and thats 70k miles ago. I just have big O rotate and road force balance them since its free.

Went to 4x4 shop in Denver and I was recommended the Toyo Open Country AT2's but I think they are newer as that is the only other consideration besides getting dura tracs again.

Thanks in advance for your input.

I've had Cooper STTs, Dunlop Mud Rovers, BFG KO1, Falken All Season, and currently BFG KM2s.

I think that the STTs were the best on/off road combo and they did well in the snow but they're damn expensive. Honestly the Falken all seasons were the best all around tire for 90% of what I did, offroad they actually did pretty well except in the sand (loose sand, not dirt). I'll probably look at the Falken ATs for my next set.
