I have the 2017 OR 4k miles and its starting to leak the same way this unit is. Notice all the leaks start out between the bolts. That's the problem! Either the diff casting or the axle housing is too wimpy and it's warping. Or the bolts may be over torqued causing the warping. Or there may not be enough bolts to spread out the force. It does not take much warpage with a thin gasket for hot diff fluid to weep out. Need to check flatness on the casting and axle housing. No wonder Toyota does not know what to do they are looking at replacing all the diff castings, axle housings, or coming up with a gasket that seals the warpage.

If you want to keep your vehicle after failing the inspection you have to sign a waiver stating that you will be responsible if something goes wrong related to the recall. Not too many people want to take that risk. My dealer gave me a 2017 Tacoma loaner, I'll just pile on the mileage on the loaner until they fix it.

Uhh... so if there is damage to the rear diff. or axle, they're off the hook and won't fix it under warranty? wtf? If the rear axle locks up and causes a crash, you're liable for all the injuries because you signed this thing??? Has anyone actually signed this and if so can you please post it so we can see what the terms are?

Others are saying just don't sign it and take your truck. I'd like to hear from someone that has ACTUALLY done this.

Yes if they say it's leaking and you choose to ignore the recall protocol it's on you if it fails later, been that way with just about any manufacturer.

I knew this chit would happen when this all started.
But the real funny part (no disrespect to anyone) is that they most likely never even used a torque wrench, but used an impact wrench cause nobody's got time in the time allotted for that chit.
They're just writing down what they see in in some spec

But no worries, It'll be alright anyways!

    Cheers!

The correct torque spec for the rear diff is 18ft.lbs according to the technical instructions for the HOG recall

    im a pipe fitter,

sometimes overtight is bad too because it will squeeze/dmg the gasket, but not tight enough it will leak.

i work with hydraulics and black, gray, making valve manilfolds, etc..

I have a 2017 Tacoma SR 4 x 4 it was built 11/2016 and when I put my Vin number the differential recall popped up, but I'm confused because some people say there not on the list , are those vehicles built after a certain date or is it just a batch in the middle or is it all of production up to a certain date . The news made it sound like all Tacoma's 16 and 17 bullt before 3/17 are recalled. Thanks

Just noticed mine was leaking around the 2 lower, passenger side studs today despite all the studs being correctly torqued and my VIN not being on the list.

Went back and pulled the guard. The stud just above the electrical connector needed about 1/12 of a turn but everything else was properly torqued already. I washed everything off with Dawn and am going to keep an eye on it until my 10k mi service late next month. Fluid level was fine.

Initial quality will not be a good number with JD Power. I filled a survey out last week. I had since traded the Tacoma for a 4Runner. Far far too many GM type issues and dealer run around. One issue after another.

I would have been stuck with the Tacoma had I not found a great trade for a 16 4Runner w same miles especially if I got this recall notice, I did anyway and got a $38,000 4Runner for the $33500 plus $750 I paid for my 35K MSRP Tacoma. Same miles. Less nanny stuff. I do miss the upgraded JBL system. The 4Runner premium does not have the nice stereo. but it has electronic seats, Leather (or what they call leather these days) and the same Entune system. Oh and 3 miles less per gallon. Worth it....

I surrendered mine on may 4th. I've been told my corporate toyota that possibly at the end of the month, the parts will be ready.

    lolo!
You'll be fine, I seriously doubt they used a torque wrench, just look at once a week for the next month or so and let us know, but you should be fine.

If its not on recall either check yourself with a 3/8" torque wrench and if the nuts are 12mm torque to 18lbs, if they're 14mm torque to 33lbs. If you prefer not to mess with it, take it to the stealer and let them fix it under warranty, you're covered.

You did great and should be fine, just check it now & then. You're still covered under warranty either way, but you took proactive action and should be good to go.

    Awesome dude!
We have a couple troubled children here that could do as you did and benefit by your wisdom by following your lead and either chit or get off the pot :hattip:

Did you pull a cover off your diff? Mine has a plate bolted over that sensor

Yeah I had to remove the cover. It was held on by 2 bolts that came out pretty easily. Sorry, I can't remember the bolt size even though I just did it...

Just making sure. Most of the people posting pictures have the different style diff, just seen you had an OR and wanted to make sure you have that cover as you have the sensor. I crawled under mine a week or two ago and didn't see anything, next time I have it up on the lift at work, I'll double check just to be sure as it was dark out when I crawled under there

Not much yet, but do have Flowmaster exhaust, with Rockford Fosgate P600.1Bd 600 RMS Mono amp for my 12" P3 with custom box and a Punch P400-4 Four Channel amp for my mids and highs running 100 watts per channel and have two speakers on each channel, not to mention 6 more hooked to the 4 channels from the headunit as well....Hopefully soon will be a body lift with new tires, and eventually the actual suspension...
I actually used to work for a valet company and a lady's Xmas presents got stolen one time when the car was in valet. We had an overflow lot down the street in a public garage, where we parked oversized vehicles (She had a Tahoe), and when the garage was full. Anyway, yeah, I was the manager and declined her claim of our responsibility due to the fact that ppl park at their own risk and it's not our fault the car got broken into, the doors were locked, and so on....She ended up making a huge fuss, and idk why the higher ups didn't just pay her out and say forget about it but they didn't, and she sued us. AND they made me go to court to "represent" us, pshh, I was pissed at my district manager...But anyway, I showed the judge our valet ticket saying we weren't responsible and all that and how we inform the guest of that when they arrive and she made her statements, and the judge couldn't decide right then and there and had to take a few weeks. So we got a letter in the mail saying that she had won due to the fact that it goes back to some "coat check" law or lawsuit that states when you accept the item into your possession you solely take responsibility of said item...since the person who owns it has no control of what you do with it while it's in your possession, and furthermore, she paid for this service and should have been protected accordingly. Even tho, we couldn't have done anything, I mean we took all the precautions, but fact of the matter is, we had more of a responsibility than she did...hell she didn't even know where it was parked, she thought it was downstairs in the locked garage, but nope, it was outside in the public garage....SOOOO, yeah, if they are taking your truck, and won't give it back, they take responsibility for that fuc""" damage. Take it to the bank.
