I hope they prove that the guy intentially fudged with the pedal to win some sort of lawsuit against Toyota.

I don't get this??? If your Toyota experienced a runaway throttle acceleration situation why don't these people just turn off the ignition before their Prius speeds up to 90 miles per hour??? I own a 2008 Toyota Tacoma and have experiences no unwanted acceleration problems, but if I did I seem to have three choices:
    1. Turn off the ignition.
    2. Depress the clutch pedal. (manual transmission only)
    3. Shift into neutral. (automatic or manual transmission)
I do not own either, but don't the Prius and Camry models have a turn off ignition position? Don't they also have a neutral transmission position?

Again, I do not own either of these Toyota models and I don't know for sure if they have an ignition off position that still allows the steering wheel to not lock up and still steer, but it seems like to me there are engine shut down options other than letting the vehicle speed up to 90 miles per hour and out of control.

I saw that on the news today. I think it was fishy to me. Driver says it was stuck for 20 minutes until cop told him to use E brake and press the brake same time. He finally ended up safe.

I think he was bunch of BS and he probably looking for money or trying to get rid of prius. I hope the tech or inspection will find out that the driver are bunch BS!!

I posted this on a dupe thread earlier :).

Probably got stuck on their Birkenstocks......

Here is an exerpt from the Foxnews story:
"They also got it going on a steep upgrade," said Officer Jesse Udovich. "Between those three things, they got it to slow down."
After the car decelerated to about 50 mph, Sikes turned off the engine and coasted to a halt.
The officer then maneuvered his car in front of the Prius as a precautionary block, Udovich said.

So the douche could have turned it off. Instead he chose to endanger all the other folks on the road including the LEO in the fracas..... Nice..... Its a friggin wonder these folks can get dressed in the morning without killing themselves....

I understand that Toyota has a problem, but you would think that a 61 year old driver would know what the "N" on his shifter stands for.

According to this more in-depth article, the officer instructed him to put the car into neutral and apply the e-brake. He then slowed down to 50mph and then shut off the car. So the answer to both is yes. It has a neutral and it's possible to shut it off.
    http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/mar/08/chp-helps-stop-runaway-prius/

Most of the articles I've seen on it neglect to mention that the officer told him to put it in neutral. I think it would give people the wrong impression that applying the e-brake with the brakes will stop the car.

I thought that the Prius only had an issue with the brakes "feeling funny" on them and there haven't been any reports (until now) of accelerator problems. This is getting outta control!!

The Prius is part electric vehicle so, of course it will feel funning when you press the break. It uses the electric motor to generate power to charge the battery when you press the break peddle or when you coast down a hill.

Anyway .... back on topic ... this sounds fishy to me too.:eek:
