Keep in mind both the e lock and non e lock rear ends are both 8" but the non e lock is referred to as an 8.4" while the e lock will be referred to as 8".

I went to look at gears at Rock auto to change my 04 PreR 2.7 auto 2wd. I want 4.56s cause I want a little more balls but still want street ability. Here's the kicker the gear is 156 but check the shipping cost hahahaha

Wait, I thought the 2nd gens used either the 8" or the 8.4" depending on if you had an e locker or not. Reading my door jam and referencing it to this thread, I have a 7.5 with 4:56? That doesn't sound right. You read the "A/TM" right?

Thanks for this thread although it just literally shat all over my hopes for some bigger tires and a lift...my code is B02A.... I had emailed ECGS and they incorrectly told me i had 4:10 (Not their fault i didnt have all the correct info and my email was pretty damn vague since im still learning). How much am i looking to get a set of real gears put in this truck? 96 ext cab 2.7L manual 4wd? the goal was an OME lift and fit some 33s. Do i simply just not have enough engine to push 33s? I love this truck and im sad its costing me a ton to get the darn thing even remotely useful. Should i look into 4:56 since 4:10 seems to be an OEM(expensive)

If you want a fool proof way to verify your ratio, all it takes is jacking up one rear wheel and putting the truck in neutral. Then put a piece of tape on the driveshaft and spin the tire 10 times. Count the number of times the driveshaft spun. I took a video with my phone of the driveshaft so I didn't have to focus on counting that and the tire at the same time.

Take the number of driveshaft rotations and multiply by 2. Then divide by 10.

When I did this on my truck the driveshaft spun 21.5 times. This comes out to be 4.30 ratio.

The reason for spinning the tire 10 times is to eliminate any discrepancies in the amount of rotation. It also makes the math simpler.
(If I had 4.56 gears, the driveshaft would have rotated about 22.5 times instead of 21.5)

Going to replace my front chunk in my 1997 Tacoma without automatic disconnect. As long as I get a front end to match the same as mine which is B03A it should bolt right up correct?

What RPM does it run at 80mph? I had a 2000 xtracab v6 5 speed with 4.10s in it and it ran like a raped ape and it ran right at 3,000. My v6 2000 DC auto runs Bout 2500 rpm at 80. Has 4.10s. Gutless wonder.

I want to say about 3K. I just drove from Fl to TX and mostly drove around 70 mph only because I noticed the high rpms at 80 and above. Can't wait to have the cash to re gear and supercharge her

If I go 285s on mine, what gears should I get? 4.30 or 4.56
