not sure if you want to stay in AK or not but there should be plenty of work in oil & gas...at least for a Mechanical Engineer...but O&G service companies will hire you with a Civil

Well, I dont know enough about the high-end machines to be able to tell you for sure. I have seen a 1' x 1' x 3' block of steel turn into something that looks like a engine block with turbine blades fins on it. I think the planning on something like that is ridiculous. While I have built my own mini cnc router at home (see garfish307 on youtube if interested), and no machining dummy, they wont let me touch or snap pics of the prototype machine shop. It is fancy and resembles a clean room more than it does a machine shop. Having started as a field engineer & running tools offshore, I am more of an engineering advisor for design projects.

All that said, we don't take any outside work that I know of...

Received an email today that told me as of next week I'll be working for the USPS.
The only part that sucks is I'm currently on a cruise ship and I'll go into training 2 days after I get back, and I'll have packing to do before I leave and a 1,000 mile road trip to complete just to get to where I'll be working.... I think it'll be a fun challenge though.

Postal service is a great career if you can put up with the politics. This can be a lifetime job, rare in this age.

I have 2 friends who just recently retired from USPS. They both loved what they were doing and said that if they have to choose again they will do the exact same thing. Both were letter carriers.

Yeah, it has the potential to be a career if I so choose, however I would like to go into law enforcement, this job is something for me to do while I submit my application for the PD and go through the interview process, I could also keep the job while I'm in the academy if I wanted to.

    .

Depends on where you're at, the city I'm going to had 18 positions open (all part time) whereas the city that I'm leaving had 2-3 openings per year for part time.

Depends on your area and what you apply for. City carriers have a higher turnover than rural carriers. I've applied a couple times to a few locations. It took them a couple months to call back, and when they did, I was already hired somewhere else. Since you can't get into a career position at first, you have to work part time where they can only guarantee one hour a week. I've heard it can take as short as a month to 10+ years to get a career position.

Not directly, but 90% of our public sector business goes to power plants to neutralize emissions. I work for a co-op, so we take care of our members first. The farmers.

Before that, 2 years in electrical manufacturing but then that place of a giant corporation got shut down. Trying to get into a CNC Field Service Tech at a company my buddy works for. Gotta go where the money is...
