I'm sure I missed it in perusing threads, so...might someone direct me to discussions that talk about updating the maps in the nav suite of etune? Does it happen automatically when you update etune? Is there a CD or mem card I have to get? What is the process? Thanks!

maps updates can only be done through the dealer. costs about ~$100 if i can recall, but i could be wrong.

Dealer or mem card? Is the mem card something you buy? And how often does one update? This is sort of a bummer...if you have to pay extra for updates.

Okay folks, let not be guessing here...

When a new updated nav SD card comes out you can buy it and swap it with the existing one in your truck if you wish.

As far as I know the current version is the 0E184 which runs about $160-170: http://parts.toyotaofdallas.com/oem-parts/toyota-micro-sd-card-862710e184

No need to have the dealer do it, though some will do the swap as a courtesy if you bought the card from them. It's simple really; open the little door, eject old card, insert new card, close the little door.

Updates seems to come out about once per year. I'm not sure when, but the card in my September 2017 truck is still current.

People here have tried to duplicate a card but been unsuccessful. I believe it is tied to a low level card serial number; duplication would require specialized equipment.

Used cards seem to work fine, either from wrecked vehicles or from someone who upgraded and doesn't need last year's card.

Think it's ridiculous to pay $170 for a map update? Don't buy a BMW. :D

Really though how often do you need to do an update? I tend to go with every second or third year on prior cars with paid updates. That said, I don't really use the POI in the in-dash nav anyway, mostly just for roads.

Yikes...that's a lot of $$$ for an update that companies like Garmin give away for free to update their stand-alone mapping/nav device!

I'm not even sure where the card would be inserted on my 2016 Tacoma. I'll have to look more closely at the screen device...there's nothing on it that I noticed that said "insert card here" :)

$160+ Too steep for me, even more so when I can get it for free thru google or scout.
Actually, all factory Nav suck. When you buy it it's already a year or two outdated.
Google updates almost once a month sometimes more as new subdivisions are build, new streets, side roads and interstate access ramps.

On top of that factory nav is not intuitive, it's horrible to use, I'm not even thinking of updating the nav on my T4R LTD, fook it, I don't use it, and I don't have time to read and learn new chit but why should I when I can spend that time here and learn from you guys instead lolo! :fistbump:

I will NOT spend a dime on my factory nav system. I attempted to use the Nav the other day to go some where, as I drove the arrival time continued to go up, distance as well. Used my phone maps, and I was headed in the right direction as my phone was accurate. Took a 2 hour ride few weeks ago, Truck Nav told me over 3 and a half hours, again phone maps under 2 and was accurate. Now to just get a good phone mount.

I picked up my 184 card on ebay for $60. Bought my truck used and it didn't have card. Popped it in and all is well.

I've used the stock nav a handful of times and haven't had any issues getting where I wanted to go. YMMV.

I've just noticed mem cards for $40 on eBay. Even at $40, they are grossly overpriced.

So no aftermarket/3rd party upgrades? Mine seems to work fine as far as highway mileage, arrival time estimates, etc., but there is NO detail once you get off the pavement.

There are plenty of Toyota navigation sd cards for sale on eBay, just make sure you're buying the latest, many of them are older versions. I picked up the 184 sd card on eBay for $50 and sold my older 183 sd card a week later for $40. I would never pay what the dealer is asking.

I have had my truck a couple months already and have not really fooled around with it, guess I should experiment with it at some point here soon before I need it.

Its there a video input on the factory HU? If so I'm thinking some Android phones support USB on the go and you can connect a mini HDMI output from the phone and plug it into the HU and use the phone's display on the HU

The big advantage to on-board nav compared to a phone is if you are out of cell phone coverage you will loose phone mapping. This happens to me a lot when Im driving around in the boonies. I love Google maps and use it quite a bit. But the entune isnt bad, if you ask me. My home city had a major highway revision project completed late last year. Ill probably update my chip when that becomes available on the new maps, since it temporarily gets lost every time I go through the city via the highway.

for 160 bucks I can buy a nice garmin or what not and get free map updates. For 35k, I got a nice looking in dash nav system that sucks and costs 160 plus each year to update.

Last Garmin I owned found its way to a new owner through a smashed window. No it wasn't visible, it'd been taken down and put away. Forgot to wipe off the suction cup mark though.

Haven't ever lost an inbuilt nav.

Around here the roads pretty much stay put. I maybe update every two or three years in vehicles with nav, and often there's a pretty cheap way to do it if you don't have to have the absolute latest version.

Mostly I use nav for traffic info and situational awareness of side street options if in an unfamiliar area. Seldom do I use it for POI stuff, I'll get that info from my phone which is always up to date.

Generally a lot easier/faster to glance at a large nav screen quickly and see what I need than to focus on a phone screen.
