Found a good deal on a recovery hook, need the two bolts that fit it. Anybody know what size bolts are used? Wouldn't mind putting on higher quality bolts than OEM.

Looks like M10 maybe? Not sure on the length and thread pitch though.

Do you have your oem bolts? Just take those into home depot with you and compare.

Good luck finding them. Went to two seperate shops, got the exact size and they wouldnt fit perfectly on the truck.

Just buy these ( I did) and save yourself a headache:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/162200978968?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

    Actual size is 12 x 1.25 x 60 mm grade 8.8

Dont just go to home depot or lowes cause when I checked they didnt have the minimum grade. ACE had the size and grade but it didnt fit properly on the truck

    Thanks!

I plan on using grade 10.9 if possible. Factory is my plan B.

I was in the same boat as you. Got the hook off the marketplace on here then had to hunt down the bolts. Who knows maybe I'm a one off, but I didnt have luck with the aftermarket bolts. The grade 10 I bought from my local ace were the exact size needed, but when I threaded them in, I could only get the bolt half way through. Weird.

Is the tip of the factory bolt kinda pointed to help it thread in? I noticed that with the sway bar bolts.

1.25 thread pitch (fine thread) is uncommon for a M12 bolt. They're out there, but looks like grade 8.8 is the most common.

May not even be worth trying to upgrade them and just order some factory ones.

    Thanks for the info!

Correct. Would be cool to find a good 10.9, but from what I'm reading it's not even worth the hassle.

Factory ones have been designed to pull the weight of the truck, and go through Toyota's QC process which is a bit more rigorous than the Chinese bolts at the hardware store. Only reason to deviate from OEM in this case would be to go stainless if you are in a high-salt environment.

Stainless bolts are weaker than steel bolts. Another stainless bolt tip. If you put a stainless nut on a stainless bolt, always put neverseize on the threads. If you don't, the threads will gaul and the bolt and nut will seize together and never come apart.

Yeah, the goal was to upgrade to 10.9, not just stick any old bolt there. ;)

Stainless would be great, but not strong enough for this particular job. I do use stainless when I can though.

Looks like factory is the best option, unless someone tracks down a 10.9 equivalent. I already ordered my factory bolt, so I'm calling this project done.

^A bolt's strength rating and its QC process can be very different. ;)
Depends on how much road salt or seawater they see. In my area, a grade 10.9 alloy steel bolt will be weaker than a 316 or 18-8 stainless bolt after one winter...
