I tried. But its just too big. No good place for it to sit cleanly. I sold the one I had on ebay and went with the Cobra 75. I know people say its cheap but seems to work well for me and it looks clean. As for the 980. Its a quality CB but just wont fit. Not anywhere that I was comfortable putting it.

Can I ask where you tried to fit it? I believe you, I just really want this radio to work in a 3rd Gen.

I have a buddy of mine that bought the bearcat for his 3rs gen. Couldnt find a good mounting spot, sold it. You cant go wrong with a 520xl, they are bullet proof. simple and tough as nails.

The only place I really tried that I thought I had a chance of getting it to fit was on the kick panel next to the shifter. I had seen other CBs mounted in that location and thought it would be the best option. But with the bracket to hold it, it just is a bit too long and a bit too wide to sit flush. I decided against it before drilling any holes. I did a quick test to see how it would fit in the center console and it def will not go in there unless you cram it in diagonally. Here are a few pics of the measurements I took for someone else on here. Perhaps this will give you a better idea.

There is a guy that mounted the 980 in a third gen behind the cup holders at the back of the center console. I believe he did it with some sort of brackets with wingnuts so he could remove it occasionally. I have the 980 sitting in my closet and when i realized it would be a pain to install it properly in the 3rd gen I went with a president johnny III.

Why compare the Bearcat SSB with a President Johnny III which doesn't have SSB? Do like I did and get the President McKinley.

Why is this the first time I'm hearing anyone talk about the President McKinley? I searched for a long time for a radio with SSB and Weather, the BC980 was all I could find; but now if there is a radio that does the same thing in a smaller package...

I bought that mic its sitting with the radio. I just dont think even with the wireless there is a practical place to install the bearcat. For me atleast im working on getting my HAM radio license. I just want a simple CB I can use mostly on trails so it doesnt need to transmit great distances. I also wanted the PA function just to screw around with. The possibilities with the new HAM gear thats out seems really cool and usefull.

I'm with you I would go ham. My problem is that nobody I wheel with is on ham so it wouldn't help too much. I may end up getting a lic just to have though.

Hey everyone, I have had a Uniden 520XL installed for a while now and one day I stopped at a truck service center and decided to pick up a Road King 56 mic. I like the way the button layout is and figured it would be an upgrade to the mic that came with the unit.

However, when I turn on my radio's PA function and speak through the Road King hardly anything is heard. If I swap back the mic it came with, the the PA is loud and clear. The same goes with a regular transmission. It is clearer but low in volume.

Any thoughts? Is this due to the noise cancellation? Or do I have a defective mic?

Does yours have a slider for the amplification on the mic itself? Are you sure the pin layout is correct? 4, 5, 6 pin and was it wired right inside the mic?

Nope. No amp slider. I looked at both mic plugs and the connections all have the same little number next to each hole.

Last thing I can think of. Open the connector on the end of the wire. Check that the colors match for each pin. Or verify that the color for ur mic has the right color wire to pin number.

I just got back from the cb shop, had a 520proXL looked at and also picked up a Road King 56b mike. The guy told me we need to keep the mike close to our mouth, not 2 inches away. After reading this I looked at the wire colors of each mike plug, not the same. Need to look into this.

But I did call the guy about said mike, he said it should be plug and play, standard 4 pin plug.

Interesting. yeah the numbers connections are numbered the same, right? So I would think the color does not matter. I'll try holding it closer, but I don't want my lips on it. Lol. I wonder if that's why they have the edge on the front.
