I'm not sure I'd give them that much credit. It sounds like the squeaky rear-leaf situation could be solved with some cheap rubber inserts. It's not completely out of the realm of possibility that this fix could be equally as simple. They just don't seem motivated to do what it takes.

I passed 11,000 miles on the odometer. The rear end makes the same faint sound, not any louder.

Do those of you with bigger, heavier tires have the howl?

@smitty99 did you add tires when you lifted?

I would like to test a hypothesis (and justify buying new tires)that the heavier tires put enough of a constant load on the diff that the howl is reduced.

I'm personally not even thinking about another tire so Toyota wont try to pin the howling on the tire. As soon as I put another tire on it Toyota will blame the tire. Not happening for me and I really want a "one up" tire size and a more aggressive tire.

Correct they will blame the tire.

That's actually the only reason I haven't so far. That and I didn't mind the stock Wrangler too much, but it's wearing poorly and I'm getting road noise.

Until I get stuck or until they fix this rear diff, I'm staying stock on the tires. I want something like a Duratrac or equivalent but I'm not giving Toyota any reason whatsoever to wiggle out of the rear diff issue.

I read that link and it sounds like that was under Acceleration which is not the same as they said the problem goes away when they let of the throttle.

I don't hear a howl from mine, but when slowly accelerating from 30ish-55ish, i feel shaking in the rear, like I'm driving on a rough road, even when I am not. I have taken it to the dealer twice, and they check the tire balance, checked to make sure they were completely circular, checked the bearings and drive shaft angle, the transmission fluid, and so forth. This is on a 2017 TRD OR DCLB.
They tried opening a case with Toyota, but since they were able to reproduce it in other similar trucks, Toyota wouldn't do anything about it, said it was a design issue.

For what it's worth, one of the times I had it in the shop, they gave me an SR5 2 wheel drive, and I did not feel that vibration at all.

Have they checked the leaf spring U-bolts, they have been known to be not tight? Just thinking of anything loose that could contribute.

Yes, I had them check those as well. Although I am planning on changing the gear oil either this weekend or next, I will likely check those as well while I am under there.

Won't work, you can't wish the noise away with fluids etc. (unless you are Toyota in which case you can pretend it doesn't exist). Its the rear diff - bad setup or inherently noisy combination of parts. Some apparently have luck with changes in pinion angle putting a load on the set-up and making it quieter...

my 17 TRD OR is nearing 10,000 miles... The rear end howl is louder than it was 8,000 miles ago. It howls on light / zero throttle application from 70-50mph.

My 2011 did nearly the exact same thing, and it took 2 years bitching with toyota to get it fixed. then it was written off 2 months after the fix... though it howled on zero throttle deceleration where the 3rd gen howl's on light throttle deceleration.

Have you brought it up at your 5k service? I would schedule a test drive with the SM or lead advisor. This is one of the first in hearing of with that broad of a range.
