4x4 laggy

Hello,

When i was up in tahoe this past weekend, I was in 4x4 and reversed my 2010 Tacoma Double Cab 6spd out of a parking spot. It felt like it wont go or is really lagging?

Is it suppose to be like that? This is the 2nd time that happened to me...It feels like my brake pad is frozen against the rotor but its not.

 

reversing straight out..some snow...it felt like it dont wanna go

4lo or 4hi?

If you had the parking brake on, it's possible it got frozen shut.

4lo is naturally going to have a lot more engine RPM than 4Hi at the same given speed making it seem as though your truck is "sluggish" when it's actually just in crawl mode and supposed to do that.

 

i was in 4H...im pretty sure that the parking brake didnt get frozen on....there was a really bad burnt smell...i think it was from my clutch...

It felt like my truck didnt wanna go..seems to happen in reverse?

 

I say dealerize it, esp. if you think your tranny internals might be involved. Work that warranty for all she's worth. 4x4 really shouldn't act differently in reverse than going forward.

Usually if you are turning your wheels and the wheels can't slip (partially dry pavement) if will feel sluggish like that. Mine has done that before when transitioning from a big ice patch which required 4x4 then turning around and backing up in someones driveway

 

well i just got back from the dealer...they said they found no problem

I showed them again when in 4x4 reverse and turning...it wont go..it wont go to a point where im burning my clutch...

 

That is a problem, however, when in 4x4 mode you will not get as tight of a turn as in 2wd, maybe try not to max out the steering wheel. 1st time I took my 4cyl off road I burn the clutch a bit too, I hate that smell. Have a friend drive it for you and check it out, or try popping the clutch up faster with about 1500 to 2000 rpm. If it breaks, now is the time for it, while still under warranty. Good luck...

 

You never mentioned before that you were turning. That's not a problem, that's normal. When turning a vehicle, the wheels inside the turn need to rotate at a faster RPM than the outside wheels. Also, the wheels that enter the turn first (front wheels typically) need to rotate faster than the wheels in the rear.

Since the engine powers all four wheels at the same RPM in 4x4, the wheels cannot do this on high traction surfaces.

On low traction surfaces, the wheels will slip, making up for the lack of extra RPM by sliding the distance they need to move.

This is why part time 4x4 is only to be used on low traction surfaces.

Understeer is normal when part time 4x4 is engaged...your truck will not turn as tightly as usual in ANY direction. Plan accordingly with your driving habits.

I strongly recommend you do some research on what part time 4x4 is, what it does, how it behaves when engaged, when to use it, and when NOT to use it.

These are relatively expensive vehicles, and 4x4 systems are deceptively easy to break if you don't know what you're doing.
